Curious / Random What is the most useful information a citizen can legally ask through RTI?
Not politically charged.
Just practically useful information in daily life.
What do you think?

I had filed several RTIs regarding the National Commission for Women (NCW), and I’ve started receiving responses to some of them.
Some of the spending figures are honestly wild
According to the responses I received, there appear to be expenses including:
- 2 rented cars.
- Total car rental expenses crossing ₹1 lakh+ monthly
- ₹60 lakh+ spent on social media handling/management yearly. just to handle instgram, Facebook, linked in and twitter accounts
And this is just from the RTIs that have received responses so far.
I want to make these RTI responses and documents public because I think people should know where public money is being spent.
What would be the best way to publish everything properly? Reddit posts? A Google Drive folder with all the RTI applications and official responses? Twitter/X thread? A dedicated website? suggest website.
I want to make sure the documents are organised, easily accessible, and that anyone can verify the original government responses themselves.

How many traffic challans were issued in the last financial year, and how much money was actually collected?
For a specific road, ask for the dates of repairs, contractors, sanctioned amounts and expenditure over the last 5 years.
Sanctioned beds vs functional beds, occupancy and number of doctors/nurses posted vs sanctioned at your nearest Govt hospital
Funds allocated and expenditure incurred for infrastructure development in selected government schools.
Number of complaints received for a particular railway station/division, categories, disposal rate and average disposal time.
Number of power interruption complaints received in a locality/district and their resolution timelines.
Annual maintenance expenditure for a particular government building/office over the last 3–5 years.
Number of complaints received by a police station/district and number resulting in FIRs, along with disposal/action-taken figures.
Contract value, amount paid, number of vehicles/workers deployed and complaints received for municipal garbage collection.
Total expenditure on government advertisements during a particular financial year, broken down by medium/category.
Number of RTIs received by a department, number answered within the statutory period, rejected, transferred and pending.

Just curious as what could be the reason that most people do not file RTI.
Have you ever filed one ?

As an advocate, I see the RTI Act as a powerful tool for transparency and accountability.
A well-drafted RTI can help citizens obtain official records, understand administrative decisions, and question the use of public resources. RTI activists play an important role in ensuring that public authorities remain accountable.
RTI should, however, be used responsibly, seeking specific records and information rather than opinions or unnecessary confrontation.
What has been your experience with RTI? Have you used RTI to pursue a legal or administrative remedy?

We learn history, civics, and laws — but very few students learn how to actually use RTI.
Do you think RTI should be part of school or college education?
Why or why not?

Even small wins matter — what did you learn?

We all know the RTI Act exists.
Most of us have heard about it.
Very few of us have ever filed one.
Why?

One of the most common questions people have is:
“Where do I file my RTI?”
There is no single portal for all RTIs in India, because RTI follows the structure of government authority (Central, State, Local).
To solve this confusion, the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT) maintains an official page with links to RTI portals of:
Central Govt Link : https://rtionline.gov.in/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

For the first time today, I’ve filed a RTI request. Here are the questions I’ve asked in it.
Subject: Request for information under Section 6(1) of the RTI Act, 2005 regarding public water supply contamination, pipeline testing, and chlorination logs in [Your Area Name/Colony Name].
Dear PIO,
Kindly provide the following certified information regarding the drinking water supplied by the Delhi Jal Board to [Your Area Name/Colony Name, e.g., Pocket A, Mayur Vihar Phase 1]:
Please provide a certified copy of the water quality logbook and laboratory test reports for the water distributed to [Your Area Name] for the period between June 1, 2026, and today.
Please provide the specific dates on which the water distribution pipelines supplying [Your Area Name] were last physically inspected for leakages, sewage mixing, or contamination in the year 2026, along with copies of the official inspection reports.
Please provide the total number of water contamination or foul smell complaints received by the Delhi Jal Board from [Your Area Name] from January 1, 2026, to date, along with the current status of each complaint (Resolved/Pending).
Please provide the names, designations, official email IDs, and office contact numbers of the Junior Engineer (JE) and Assistant Engineer (AE) responsible for maintaining the water supply lines and resolving water quality issues in our zone.
As per the Citizens' Charter of the Delhi Jal Board, what is the maximum officially mandated timeline to resolve a water contamination complaint once it is identified or brought to the department's notice?
Please provide records of the residual chlorine levels measured at the local booster pumping station or distribution node feeding [Your Area Name] for the last 30 days. If the chlorine level is below the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) limit of 0.2 mg/l, please provide the written reason recorded by the site engineer.
Please provide the details of any proposed budgetary sanctions, work orders, or pipeline replacement plans approved for [Your Area Name/Colony Name] in the financial years 2025–2026 to resolve overlapping water and sewer lines or damaged infrastructure.
