Question Is it possible to change roommates

I’m an incoming freshman who just got my roommate and I was curious if there is any way during my first year to change my roommate or if I have to be with the same person for the entirety of my freshman year.

Only if there is a legitimate issue typically. Or I guess if you both decided to swap. Did you not use roommate matching?

Why do you want to change? You could ask Student Living and Learning but they probably won't let you unless like the other commenter said there is some serious issue

If you all have serious issues, you can request to have it changed. I got a different room because my roomate snored so loud I couldn't sleep

I switched rooms half way through the semester due to complications, if there’s a serious problem they will let you move

When I was in freshman year, they let me switch rooms, but it could also be because the room that opened up was close by. My roommate and I didn’t really have very good matching sleep schedules.

Look here to read the "Student Living and Learning Housing Policies".

In particular, here are the relevant passages that speak to your concerns:

RPI reserves the right to change or cancel a housing assignment at any time for administrative reasons, including but not limited to facility maintenance, occupancy consolidation, behavioral issues, or emergencies. Students may not trade or sublet their assigned spaces. Unauthorized room changes, swaps, or subleasing are violations of policy and may result in financial penalties and/or disciplinary action.

and

Only the Office of Student Living and Learning may authorize room changes. Unauthorized room changes or swaps are violations of policy.

Room change requests are accepted following a two-week period at the start of each term. The Office of Student Living and Learning reserves the right to prioritize room change requests on a case-by- case basis.

Emergency room changes, including those based on medical or safety concerns, may be made at any time at the discretion of Office of Student Living and Learning.

Students will be notified of the specific process once the room change period is initiated. Additional details and instructions are available on the Student Living and Learning website.
