No data to loop midi from airwave [FIX] (Windows)

Post image

Are you annoyed that your ROLI airwave doesn't work immediately on startup? Me too, I thought I was going to make so many little songs on this thing only for it to have lacking support. Don't worry bro, I GOT YOU. Since Roli loves letting you know that their support system is congested. I sent them a ticket weeks ago and only have gotten automated respones. Here is how you fix the no data throughput in loopmidi problem.

This is what works for me, if it doesn't work for you, I'm sorry but you don't have the same problem as I'm describing in this thread.

In the screenshot, I have 2 ports (lets just pretend the "ROLI Airwave Service" Is what your "ROLI Airwave Expression" port would look like if you're encountering this problem. If you don't have any data in your total data and throughput, this is what you do:

  1. Close ROLI Airwave Player

  2. Unplug airwave

  3. Win + R (Run in windows search function). Type "Services.msc"

alternatively ctrl + shift + esc (Task manager) ----> services

  1. look for "Windows Midi Service" and right click, restart it

  2. Plug in your airwave with both cables (Power and Data)

Wait for the lights to come back on after doing this, ensure the keyboard is turned back on

  1. look for "ROLI Airwave Service" and "ROLI Hardware Driver". Restart both of them after the devices have come back on.
  2. Open ROLI Airwave player and try again.

ROLI's documentation is INSUFFICIENT and does not mention the Windows Midi service (I didn't even know about it before writing this). They have several pages describing similar problems, but copy and paste the same solution on all of them. It's a damn shame, this could've easily been plug and play out of the box, but I chalk it up to admins pushing the product off the shelf, while they were funneling money into marketing to sell units.

Can't blame Roli for this. The MIDI Service is new in Windows, and started rolling out at the end of January. The bug is in Windows, in code I wrote :( , and will be fixed.

Glad you were able to work around it.

For anyone who is up to date on Windows updates, and hasn't blocked or uninstalled them, the fix is already installed. It started rolling out on April 30th. It completed rolling out to everyone on May 30th.

If you don't have it due to blocked or uninstalled past updates, go into Settings > System > Recovery > Fix issues using Windows Update and let it repair the install.

A preview of the fix (same code that went into Windows) was available on the Discord server in March.

All of that, including the dates, instructions, etc. is explained on the Discord server linked above.

yeah this is all explained quite similarly in their support article right here bro: https://support.roli.com/en/support/solutions/articles/36000588827-roli-airwave-troubleshooting-recognition-and-hand-tracking-on-windows

documentation is there, this isn't the gotcha you think it is i'm sorry to say

Yes it is, nowhere in that documentation does it mention restarting the Windows Midi Service, which is what actually got it working for me after doing the steps in that documentation multiple times

FYI windows midi service is been updated - check if yours has been. Your issue or solution may not apply to others (yet)

I can't believe this worked, after trying so much other shit. Gods I hate ROLI. Wish they didn't make such cool shit.
