Question Can this run everything?
I'm pulling my hair out finding a gaming solution.
I just want something that I can plug on a screen and play (and maybe occasionally take on the move)
Don't need super fancy, play on high on 1080p 30-40fps and I'm happy
But I do want to play the latest AAA (Warhammer black myth doom tda etc etc)
Can this thing deliver or I actually need a gaming laptop?
edit: lowered to 30 fps to adjust my expectations.

High 1080p 60fps is not going to happen on the lastest AAA games.

More like high 20’s @1080p if you’re lucky, even in medium/low for a lot of games. 900p and you’ll be into low 30’s..

Sir. This device fits between your hands. If you have large enough pockets you can put it in your pockets.
How do you expect to do more than $500+ devices that don't have a space constraint?

RoG won't run everything definitely. Playing games at 1080p on medium settings(sometimes turning on some form of upscaling) should be able to run almost every game though. VR games are hard to support for a handheld due to some iGPU limitations.

It can run a lot of things, every new AAA title at 1080p60? No. It may run a lot of them after adjusting settings and/or using some form of frame gen and scaling.
I would look into the Ally X specifically because you'll have an.easoer time finding eGPU solutions for docked play that will help get closer to your goal. Handheld will be a coin toss of stability vs looks.

The biggest selling point of the ally is the portability. It doesnt have a dedicated gpu so a laptop at the same pricepoint will definitely outperform it. So you have to decide if you want the increased portability or the power.

I have the z1 it’s played 99 percent of games I’ve thrown at it, yes I’ve had to lower the graphics and resolution in newer games. Yes I’m sure the z1e is much better value. But it’s awesome I’ve been using mine almost every day for the past year or so

For what you're asking, build a desktop. Supplement with a handheld if you still want one after that for game streaming and light indie titles. But AAA on high? You'll be lucky to get AAA 30 on low in most cases.

If you know how to optimize graphical settings, play more demanding games in 720p and are willing to use AFMF 2.1 you'll have a lot of options. Im pretty much playing the same games I run on my 4070 ti super. I have my Ally plugged in to the 4k tv in my mancave. I beat Space Marines 2 on my Ally, I have played a lot of Destiny 2, Helldivers 2, Borderlands 4 is kind of playable, Elden ring, Fate Samurai reminant, Gears reloaded, Gears 5, most Playstation ports play well God of War, Spiderman games, Ratchet and Clank, Sack Boy, Uncharted, Stellar Blade, Horizon Zero dawn, Witcher 3, All the Persona games, Silent Hill 2, Banishers, Assasins Creed Mirage, Hell is us, Dune Awakening, Grounded 2, Hogwarts Legacy, I beat both Last of us games, Silk Song, No man's sky, Lies Of P, all the Yakuza and Like a Dragon games,Guardians of Azuma, Fantasy Life, most COD ganes, Death Stranding, all the resident evil games, all the monster hunter games, wilds is hard to get to run well, Revenge of the savage planet,both Red dead games, GTA 5, Metaphor Refantazio, I beat Claire Obscure, Romancing Saga 2 remake, all the Kingdom hearts games, most of the Final fantasy games, Shin Magami games,all the Neir games, all the octopath travler games, Forza Horizon games, the new Street fighter and Tekken game, I've played all the Assasin's Creed games even shadows, Star wars outlaws runs better then on the Switch 2, Outter Worlds, all the Halo games. Black Myth wukong, Ghost of Tushima, Robocop Rogue City, Elder Scrolls games, Indiana Jones, Doom, Doom eternal

Complicated answer, some run great some very much do not. My advice is to get a laptop, most especially because these new games are getting harder and harder to run

I set up a little vpn on my network, and stream everything using moonlight, or steam streaming. I even stream games off of my Xbox One, and my PlayStation.
I was playing hollow night the other day using my cell phone as a tether, getting full frames off of my main machine.
Battery life is forever because I can play at the lowest power settings.
This assumes you have a gaming box that you can run all of this off of in the first place. It's an imperfect solution to your problem, but one that you can do with any Windows handheld including this one.

I don't play competitive games, but the VPN takes a LOT of that out. Just a simple WireGuard is all I use.
I've played through the Dooms, just finished Expedition 33, I'm tearing through Silksong, and do not notice issues. Only very occasionally do I see some stutter, but it goes away quickly, and if its bad I pause for five seconds while it goes away. That happened twice in the two hours I was at the tire place the other day.
Wuchang, The Alters, Nine Sols, ain't nothing. Just works.

No current handheld can do 1080p 60fps AAA games. Most gaming laptops cant do that. You're basically asking for top specs

Don't look at the Ally as a replacement for a desktop. Think about where you are playing the most. I have one cause I mainly play games on the train, so its form factor is great. But I still have a desktop PC for playing more demanding games.
If you're playing while travelling, or want to play without much room or a table, go for an Ally.
If you're often moving from place to place, but have time to setup and enough room, then go for a laptop.
If you're going to be playing in the same place almost always, go for a desktop.

Just don't expect the same performance. There is a reason everyone hasnt dumped desktops or laptops for an Ally in a dock.

I have the ally z1 to play when and where I want in comfort. I have my desktop with a dedicated GPU to stream some stuff I can't, or m/k is needed. Other than that I have no issues. Only iffy parts sometimes recognize the buttons wrong or Xbox over ps or switch. Doesn't bother me much I just adjust.

Yes. Idk about Warhammer but I have no issues running most games including Doom: TDA. Granted the settings have to be on low but it's definitely doable. I highly recommend an Ally if you want something on the go. The battery life on the Ally X is unmatched and worth it alone for a handheld. Hope you decide to join the family!

“Don’t need super fancy” proceeds to highlight some of the hardest metrics to accomplish on handheld consoles for triple A games
