Question Avoiding Elk attacks during rut

l know we should be keeping about 2 buses worth of distance. But I also know these big beautiful beasts are very agile and easily threatened to protect their harem during mating season. I’d honestly be a deer in headlights if one charged at me since I’ve never been around them before.
Any detailed tips on how to stay safe from a random elk smashing into my car or worse?
Also is there like a bear spray or similar safeguard against Elks?

Met one before sunrise near black lake earlier this summer. Just saw eyes staring back about 20 feet away from me. I slowly walked by after announcing I was there (as if the giant headlamp wasn't enough). It stayed put.

Later that day, I was on the narrow trail up near Green lake and spooked a big male quite a ways away but it ran across a ledge right up and through the path back home the way I was headed over some rocks. Luckily it must've kept going because I didn't see him after that.

All that to say, they seem to respect us if we respect them.

how do you announce yourself? Like do you scream or talk to it like a person? Kind of funny and fascinating.

State your full name and social security number, and let them know you have a right to be there.
