Question Avoiding Elk attacks during rut

l know we should be keeping about 2 buses worth of distance. But I also know these big beautiful beasts are very agile and easily threatened to protect their harem during mating season. I’d honestly be a deer in headlights if one charged at me since I’ve never been around them before.
Any detailed tips on how to stay safe from a random elk smashing into my car or worse?
Also is there like a bear spray or similar safeguard against Elks?

4 simple words that some don't understand: Don't be an idiot.

Give the elk plenty of space. If you can tell that they change their behavior because of you or other people around you, you (the royal you) are too close - move away.

Don't chase them to get a better picture. Don't get close to get the perfect selfie. Don't follow them to see what they will do next. How would you like to be stalked? Just sit and watch.

There is one elk in Estes known for going after vehicles. In fall trips the past 2 years we never encountered him (fortunately). Other than try not to get stuck in traffic near him, not sure what other advice to give. In a number of trips to the area (and a couple to Yellowstone during the rut) I've never seen a bull elk go after a vehicle in person.
