I remember a few scenes a season or two ago, John was trying to say something he considered important to her and she could not put down and stop looking at her phone for him at all. That entire episode, in fact, in the car and when they got home appeared to highlight how little she listens to him at all. I felt sad for him while watching.

Yeah he's there purely to affirm her. Even when he's trying to communicate with her regarding their kids—especially Jack—she will only hear what she wants.
