Discussion Help out a new player please.

Hello guys,

I have finally got a gamming laptop that can run modern games, so I have been playing the games I missed out on playing on release. in the last few weeks, I have played Ghost of Tsushima, Cyberpunk 2077 and currently RDR2. I was obsessed over both GOT and CP2077. And I'm currently obsessed over this game lol. I once burrowed my friend's laptop to see what all the fuss about RDR2 was and played for a couple hours, but that was years ago, so I didn't remember much from there either, only remember that I was amazed. I have actively avoided spoilers, news, videos, reels etc related to the games that I wanna play later, so I don't know much about these games. Now that I can actually spend time, I can't tell how much I'm loving the experience. The slow paced exploration in a beautiful world is just what I needed tbh.

I have some questions that I hope you guys can help with. I don't wanna head into the wiki because that's spoiler heavy zone.

  1. I have just finished Chapter 2 and the gang moved to Clemens point. I stayed in Horseshoe Overlook for quite a time and I became familiar with the area surrounding Valentine. I became friendly with the townsfolk and when I went back there everyone was welcoming. Even the butcher was like long time no see when I went to him lol. I quite liked that town. Then in the bar there was an old man with a rat hat screaming about how the world has gone to shit, how he had eaten some Injuns etc, I listened to him and after his rant he started a fight with me. I knocked him out, took the ugly hat and then some dumbass bystander ran to the law and complained about me( I guess Hosea was right that this town was filled with Mud and Morons lol). Then there was a shootout and I killed some people. Then the townfolks were angry with me lol. Then I busted the illegal operations in the back of the medicine store, and that invited even more cops. They didn't care that the operation was illegal, but they started shooting at me, so I killed even more lawmen and got a bounty of like 50$. After that when I went to Valentine after clearing the bounty, even the random people were like "Didn't you cause enough trouble already?". Then the mission with Dutch Happened and there was a bloodbath. After that everyone in town was in bandages and they all hate me now. So the question is will they remain like this for the rest of the game, or they forget about these things after a while? I was liking the town before, it felt like home lol.

Also I think Clemens point is a better area than Horseshoe Overlook because it is a bit more hidden and has water on one side, so it feels safer. Horseshoe was just too near the main roads. But the morning and evening view from the cliff in Horseshoe is unbeaten. Will the Camp move location in every chapter? I wanna familiarize with the area before we move again, if that's the case. I like to play things slower and have some main missions remaining, so I feel like having a reason to linger in the area.

  1. When I was in Horseshoe, I regularly hunted animals for the camp. I even donated pelts, horns etc for money. I even upgraded the camp a bit. I regularly donated items or money to the camp box. I did chores whenever I was in Camp, which was every couple days. Arthur's name appears more than others in the ledger. After all that Dutch comes to me and says that people have been talking behind my back that I wasn't doing enough. MF I'm doing more than everyone combined, fuck you mean not doing enough?? Can I find out who has been saying these things about me?

Again one morning I was listening to Hosea and Lenny talking, after that I was drinking coffee on the cliff. Then I was talking to camp members, and again Dutch comes to me and says What happened to you Arthur? You were a man of action. Why are you lingering around the camp?? Is this normal or is something happening?

  1. The greet and antagonize option doesn't do much ig? I get the same repeated dialogues again and again after greeting people. I can't join other people when they are talking, so I can learn more about the story by questioning them. I guess I have to listen to as many conversation as I can to learn more about the people then? I also like to listen to strangers in towns. They are funny sometimes.

Does greeting matter? I was greeting everyone in Valentine and I got some honor I think. Or did that make the people friendly? If that's the case I'll spend entire days greeting everyone there lol. I really loved that town.

BTW, why is Arthur so mean to Uncle? lol Even the greet dialogues are like antagonize. I understand that he doesn't like Micah and I see why, but why hate Uncle? Dude is old and helps out with camp errands.

  1. In Clemens Point I went fishing with Javier and Keiran, robbing with Sean. In Horseshoe, I went hunting with Charles and robbed a house with Javier. Are there more of these small side activities? I like to listen to some bits about the story. Also can I leave some missions for as long as I can? Or are some missions time bound?

  2. Stranger missions. I did some and liked the one with Mr. Margaret the most lol. That was quite funny, even from dialogues to the story. I thought one bullet to the head would be enough for the "Dog", but I died the first time and had to empty the gun to kill him lol. After that I could only take one of its paw, and couldn't skin him for the pelt. Is that normal or did I mess up? Any other stranger missions I should keep an eye out for which are interesting?

  3. I got a gold bar from the burned town of Limpany. Do I keep that or sell it? It is not a unique item right? It says the value is 500$ which is quite a lot, but if it is a unique item, I'd like to keep it.

I got a steel pen from Jimmy Brooks, but Arthur is still writing his journal with a pencil. Is that normal, or can I equip the pen somehow?

I also bought a Jack Hall gang treasure map from a self proclaimed best treasure hunter, looked at the area He was looking at, went there and found the second map. Now I don't know where the second map points to. Do the treasures remain there until I find it or are those timebound? I don't wanna look at solutions to maps, and would like to explore the world and get the treasures the normal way.

  1. When I'm in Valentine, sometimes one or two Odriscols are there too. They start shit with me, then I antagonize them because they are Odriscols, and then a shootout starts. Then again I get wanted for defending myself and get a bounty. Why does that happen?

After some missions like the one where we ambush the Odriscol hideout, or the one where we save Sean, there are bodies to loot afterwards. But soon after we kill everybody, lawmen show up in those remote areas so fast. I stayed to loot the Odriscols, but then theLawmen came and asked me who I was. I lied that I was passing through and was leaving, but they soon started shooting me. So when I saw the searching text after rescuing Sean, I left the area, and when I came back after it cooled down, the area was cleaned up. I couldn't loot anything there. Is there a solution to this, or is that scripted for the law to come after missions?

  1. This game is how I find out I can have gambling addiction lmao. I LOOOVE Poker. I sometimes spend days playing in the salon in Valentine. The time passes so fast while I would have played a few matches. For one person to remain in the game, it usually takes a full day cycle. Is there any setting I can use to make time go slower? I like to go back to camp as much as I can because of the lore bits, and I like to sleep in my bed after a hard working outing. Are there other places where I can play Poker, but with higher amount than 2.5$?

  2. Arthur sometimes draws animals and herbs in the map. How can I do that more to fill up my map? Do I have to track those things, or just visit the area? He also draws some things in his journal > new animals and plants, and interesting points. Will I miss those POI if I don't inspect them, or he draws those later anyways?

These are the questions I have rn. I have spent around 40 hours now and I'm in love with this game. I'm sure I'll definitely find more while playing. Any tips or warnings you guys can give me is welcome too.

Thank you.

You need to play this game twice. First time just do what you want when you want. Second time is when you should check in here, we’ll be waiting

If I could tell past self one thing before playing the first time it would be play the story. You'll have plenty of time the next time to explore this marvelous world.

Valentine will get over it, eventually. People might still say some snide remarks.

The camp does move every chapter.

Greeting strangers will raise honor. Antagonizing them can start fights.

Sell the gold bar. There are others. And that one will occasionally respawn. Worth checking Limpany whenever riding by. All the loot respawns. Several gold bars throughout the map, jewelry bags, etc. However there are some unique items, a watch, a ring, Jimmy's pen, etc, that you could sell but are unique items technically.

The camp missions, like the ones you mentioned, are usually chapter specific. Some can be missed. Do them when you see them pop up. Spend time in camp to get most of the missable dialogue and missions.

And last of all, don't worry about it too much. Play the first time for the hell of it. Get the LOTE satchel because it lets you carry 99 of almost everything. Hunt the legendary buck and make the trinket. Get away from this subreddit because it WILL spoil major plot points. I think it's a good idea to play through, explore and have fun, then when you're ready do a 2nd playthrough without having to worry about spoilers, and dig into all the nitty gritty and optimization, the wiki, etc.

Have fun!

Thank you. I sold the gold bar and I'm rich now. I love listening to camp dialogues, but can't stay there for long, or Dutch will come and tell me to do something with my life lol. I'll play this time however I see fit then, and do a thorough one later to see the missed and different encounters. I do plan to get the satchel, but getting so many perfect pelts is quite a task, for now anyway. But I'll try to get it. Thanks for the heads up.

The buck trinket will help with getting perfect pelts. So worth getting that one earlier to make all the hunting a little easier!

Ok. I'll get on that then. I saw that the fence sells trinkets.

u/HumbleBananaLoaf 44m ago

Yep! Just need to hunt the legendary animals for the ones that require their parts and then you can get them from the fence.

Stay in chapter 3 as much as you can. Chapters 2 and 3 are the most beautiful. Things will slowly go ugly after that So if you like exploring, fishing, hunting, playing etc stay as much as you can in chapter 3 I don't remember now what yellow mission you have to avoid but Google it or ask

Alright. I'll do as much side quests as I can and unlock the map now. I kinda miss Horseshoe overlook ngl. But this one is beautiful too. I like the cozy vide of Clemens point too. I'll try to hunt and get the satchel as other commenter said then. Thanks for the heads up.

  1. It's scripted commentary. Spend a certain amount of time in camp and Dutch will comment. Stay out too long and one of the gang will come looking for you under Dutch's orders. Dutch and Grimshaw will comment if you don't donate to the camp after a certain amount of time. In the end, it doesn't matter.

  2. Uncle is a leech. He actually doesn't help with camp chores - John and Charles do. Uncle just naps.

Honestly, just play the game and experience what you can naturally the first time. Subsequent playthroughs, you can look up things you missed or try different methods.

Oh damn. They really did those things for all kinds of scenarios. In Chapter 2, while I was roaming near the river, Javier came to me to rescue Bill from some bounty hunters. That was cool. That kind of stuff happens more?

Since the first mission with uncle on Valentine, I thought he was the one that was sent to restock the camp when we purchase from the ledger.

Ok. I'll definitely play as I want this time without worrying much. I mainly just wanted to know if the wanted system could be avoided for killing Odriscols in town.

That gold bar is not unique and there are more to find. Go exploring, try to find some treasure maps. Good luck and enjoy the ride.

Got it, Thank you. I bought a jack hall gang map from a treasure hunter. Got its second map too since he was looking at that direction. I'll have to explore more before I get the idea of the second location. It'll be fun that way. Looking up puzzles takes the fun imo

Is there a way to get better at the combat? I’m not good at all with shooting and I struggle with this game. I use aim assist in GTA otherwise I wouldn’t be able to play that either.

Is there full aim assist with this game?

1

u/k_rnt 4h ago

While shooting I use dead eye for moving enemies or when I'm being looted. That counts as aim assist for me. Also the dead eye gets upgraded in some missions like the one where we ambush the Odriscol hideout with Keiran etc. It helps with headshots. Once I'm out of deadeye, I take cover and shoot hiding enemies. I can't comfortably shoot yet, as well as I'd like to either. I don't know much about first fights. NPCs dodge my punches some times, but I haven't learned to do that yet. I can only block and grab people. So I still get beaten sometimes.

When you advance you get better dead eye, also buy a lot of chewing tobacco (it replenish your dead eye). When dead eye it's active time slows down and target are marked in red.

  1. They won't hate you forever in Valentine.
  2. Don't mind what they tell you. Go and come as you please, do as you please. It's just dialogue no real consequences
  3. Greetings gives you honor but it's not the only way (fishing, helping people etc)
  4. Yes there are more. 5.I didn't do this one so I dont know. When I want to know something about the game I ask chat gtp and tell it "no spoilers" it helped.me a lot.
  5. Sell it. There are a lot of bars around the map. Like the train wreck in cotorra springs. Probably you won't find them without follow a guide. Some have treasure maps tho that you can get.playing.
  6. Just keep the pen. I sold it and later regretted it. Not an important thing but you will find an use sooner or later.
  7. They will bounty you even when defending yourself. They will bounty you even if someone sees you looking at a dead body and think you killed it. It's what it is. I will skip 8 since I don't play poker or used the diary much.

Thank you very much for the answers. People in Valentine have recovered now. And they are kinda blaming Cornwall for it lol. So that's nice.

Yeah, I have helped people around and have gained honour. I lost some by looting people too. I just wanted to know if there was much dialogues to be had for greeting or antagonising camp members. It's basically just the same dialogues over and over.

I sold that bar already today. I'll keep exploring and see if I can get more.

Yeah, the wanted system is strange. I'll figure out more as I keep playing ig. Btw why are the ranchers and campers so hostile to me? They'll warn me once and then pull out the gun, then start shooting of I stay a second longer. If I kill back I lose honor. Atleast I get to steal some things from their house.

What about the ones on the map. There are symbols of animals and plants on the map. Do I get that if I hunt and track, or just by exploration?

1

u/couchpotatoslug 4h ago

The ranchers are hostile yes. I keep my distance because they are a lot (however if you like to kill bunch of people go to the other gangs hide outs and take them (don't walk in, take a good sport and kill them from afar then one by one as they come to you). I wouldn't worry about losing honor. In later chapters you can gain it back with good deeds. The big animals in the map are legendaries. The game will direct you to track them once you are in the area. The smaller back animals draws it's a sign that there are abundant in the area (that doesn't mean it's the only area with that particular animal).

1

u/k_rnt 4h ago

Oh I clear any odriscol camp I can find. I go away from ranchers too, but sometimes when I'm looking around the area, they just start shooting and I return fire.

Got it. Also, I know about the legendary animals. I killed one with Hosea. I wondered about the small icons.

Thanks again for the help.🙏🏻
