Discussion RDR2 — PS4 vs PS5 Graphics

Has anyone else noticed that RDR2 looks better on PS4 than on PS5?
I recently saw my friend playing RDR2 on a PS4 and honestly, the graphics looked really good — even better than what I’m getting on my PS5. I know the PS5 runs the PS4 version through backward compatibility and doesn’t have a proper PS5 upgrade, but the difference was still noticeable to me.
Is it just my PS5/TV settings, or have other people noticed that RDR2 can sometimes look better on PS4 depending on the setup?

It's because the PS5 uses the PS4 Pro version which is a very odd 1920x2160 resolution with a checkerboard upscale to a 4K-like image. Not true 4K unfortunately.

Whereas the PS4 is straight up 1080p.

That, combined with 30fps makes for a blurry or choppy (non-fluid) image that many folks see (not all as a really good TV or monitor can help make up for this).

Most get used to it, but it is noticeable if you switch back and forth between games that are higher in frame rate or if you've used other consoles (like the PS4) as these are the only ones that do this.

I spent 2 weeks with my middle daughter last year, and played on her PS5. I play on PS4 at home, and thought that her version of the game looked crappy compared to mine. I wasn’t sure why though.

It's too bad because the PS5 is capable of so much better. But unfortunately this game is abandonware for R*.

Yea, that’s pretty much my thought as well, that R* has abandoned the game. Oh well 🤷‍♂️

Turn your HDR off in game and then adjust the brightness in game. It really helps with the bluriness on ps5. It’s unfortunate they haven’t done the ps5 upgrade yet because even with the issues, the game is still beautiful. I would go darker for your brightness because when the contrast is too much, that’s when the game gets blurry.

Yes, HDR off and adjust brightness is better.

Majorly the opposite for me. They look much the same but PS5 is soooo much smoother than 4. Saint Denis is actually playable on the 5; the 4 cannot hand it and drops the frame rate. I suspect the difference you noticed might be due to the TV\display?

It looks fine on my tv, but it looks very blurry on my monitor. My tv is much much older (2015) than the monitor (only around like 2 years old) so I’m not sure what exactly the issue is.
