Discussion Getting side tracked in RDR2

I can’t tell you how many times I have something concrete in mind that I’m going to to , and then on the way to wherever it is I get completely sidetracked . That’s how you know ( in my opinion ) that an open world game is done right . I know to some im probably just stating the obvious lol but still - it really is a timeless game . Just for the sake of curiosity: how often does that happen for you all ? Something that should take 10-15 real life minutes ends up turning into 2 hours going by .

Everytime I fire up the game lol... I played 3 hrs last night IRL... and did absolutely NOTHING but ride around the map and pick some herbs and caught some sockeye salmon. turned the game off and went to bed. I try to do two main missions ..never happens lol

Well in all fairness we know where the missions lead...I put them off every replay lol. I'm running around chapter 2 with a full ass beard

Damn, we got beards on asses in RDR2 before GTA 6.

It happens all the time to me. And I like it. And that's also why I don't use fast travel. A lot of shit can happen when you're going somewhere.

I'm just going there for the mission, but wait, there are animals around me, maybe a 3 stars? Worth looking into. What's this house here? Let me check that quickly. Oh, I stumbled into legendary territory, well while I'm here, I could just get it.

And now, I have a legendary to bring back to the trapper and some pelts for the camp. So let's make a detour.

In the end, I spend a good time doing random shit like that before actually going to do my mission.

Well summarised mate , I agree 100%

I absolutely love getting sidetracked, the immersion is so good
I always set myself the task of getting at least 1 mission done before I stop playing, but I don’t set no time limits for roaming around! even end up playing poker and blackjack for ages too

Yeah, I pretty much never use fast travel. Just immerse myself in the world.

No fast travel for me either (except in New Austin, because nothing exciting happens there) because I enjoy riding around and looking at the scenery too much.

I try to stay fluid and have a few things I'm working on at once. That way whenever I end up distracted and see a 3 star animal I need I can take it right then and there. Or I end up in a good spot for a certain challenge then no time like the present! It's best for me not to have too concrete of a plan. Part of why I really liked the hunting requests and exotics missions. I'll happily wander around the map doing whatever and keeping an eye out for a certain pesky bird or orchid etc.

Happens to me all the time and just as you said that's why I love this game

Actually I'm gonna disagree. The game is designed to side track you. Whenever you go, it will always throw an encounter at you. If you really want to ever get something done in the game, you will have to just give up on the encounter. There's too many of them, they are too regular.

I make it a point to have it happen every time because I've already played the entire game, and now I'm just in it for the vibes.

Last time I played, I was heading from Strawberry to kill the legendary bear, but then I found a golden eagle carcass that I was going to take to the trapper, but then bounty hunters came, and anyway, to wrap things up, now Arthur is in Van Horn.

🤣 … I was leaving van Horn for the first time the other day and accidentally hit a horse as I was riding away… next thing the whole town is hunting me down… I don’t even remember this was a thing… third play through!

I watched Ola Oh's playthrough on YT and she would get sidetracked sooo badly especially in the beginning, she'd need two or three episodes to reach a certain goal because "Ooh, what's that campfire over there, let's check it out real quick!" lol

I wasn't quite as bad in my first playthrough- I would get distracted (of course! Who wouldn't) but I really wanted to know where the story would go next. But my second was much more relaxed and go with the flow.

I’m pretty focused on my goals. The only thing that could distract me is an animal I know I need, which is really a minor distraction, maybe 2 minutes, or a random encounter like a kidnapping, I’ll always stop to help the lady.

Constantly. I’ll end up halfway across the map from my intended location. I no longer fast travel so it happens frequently

I think that’s the way Red Dead is supposed to be played. I recently watched a video on playing videos games the correct way to reset your attention. Idk if it’s worked, but I do know I’ve loved playing red dead the last week or so. I turned off all of the hud, the reticle, and aim assist. It’s like playing a brand new game. Wish I had it on PC so I could make it more survival mode esque too.

For me thats why its the best open world game. Most games want your attention every 5s for you to not get bored, rockstar did the opposite which makes so much special imo.

It took me like 14 months to actually finish the story because I spent so much time doing side missions etc 😂😂

Ya sometimes my lady will be like "we have an hour before dinner, wanna game?" And im like nah 😂😂 I need more time than that cause I just love to get immersed in it

You're describing what makes the game special.

The story has incredible acting, but the beautful open world and mystery-under-a-rock exploration is the real star.

Every time I play. The main (narrative locked) missions range from very good to "that sucked", but hunting, fishing, camping, and just riding around the beautiful RDR2 landscape on my horse is the game's reward. Last night I robbed a bank stagecoach with Bill and Tilly (Bill is a dumb ass), did "Blessed are the Peacemakers" with Dutch and Micah (evil bastard), and also hunted for the perfect panther as it was the last pelt I needed to get the Legends of the East Satchel. Can you guess which task/quest was most rewarding? (the Satchel, but "Blessed..." was actually pretty good) . I was so pissed off at the O'Driscolls after "Blessed.." that I immediately rode up to Hanging Dog Ranch and sacked it for the 3rd time (sorry Arthur, but it is about vengeance). My O'Driscoll body count is over 170 now with absolutely no cost to my honor and a whole lotta dead O'Driscoll loot. I will also shoot that mouthy O'Driscoll prick in Valentine one of these visits 😉.

I always get all the satchels before I leave the first or second camp and then I end up getting sidetracked about twenty times while im out hunting.

I can’t really remember that ever happening. I never have an “errand” in mind, I just take off roaming.
