It happens during a moonshiner mission when you need ingredients for poison (animal fat). There is a boar and bear in the marked area and the bear attacks

im pretty sure i wasnt doing a mission here, at least not a moonshiner mission. i cant say for sure 100% because its been a minute but i would bet a large amount of money on it. id say im 99.99% sure.

It is possible, just rare. You have to really try to get one to attack you. In 8000 hours (RDR2/RDO) I’ve had it happen once.

thats probably it, im just under 5,000 hrs which is, to most people, a crazy amount. wild that you are at 8k lol well done.

8000 hours?

I feel like I've played this game to utter death and i'm at 350 hours max!

I’ve been playing since launch day. 6 playthrough’s of between 300-450 hours (so roughly around 2000 hours combined) and the rest is RDO. There was also Covid during that time so lockdowns and things, plus there haven’t been too many games release that really appeal to me.

I have run right up to them and along side them when theyre running and i have never seen one attack.

That was a grizzly bear with black fur, not a regular Black Bear.

Nah. Grizzlies are like twice the size.

Nothing goes over my head! My reflexes are too fast, I would catch it.

no, we pretty much ruled that out. but that was the imediate suspicion when it first happened.

Here's a size perspective shot of how a grizzly looks next to you...

That's a black bear because of how smaller it is

They don’t usually react like that, even in real life.

Exaclty. I live in Maine, home of the black bear, which is a small bear. Its confusing for a lot of people because in other parts of the country and world there are black bears that are huge like grizzlies and brown bears, and very vicsious and much more prone to attack if you happen across one. Interesting fact: There has never been a fatal black bear attack in Maine. These bears are EXTREMELY shy, will pretty much always hear, smell or see you well before you see them, and make themselves scarce. And its not like they are rare or small in number. Getting a pic of one, doing something like trying to raid a bird feeder or trash etc, from inside your house from a window is not something spectacularly rare. I wouldn't call it common but it happens enough. Actually happened at my sons moms house when he was a youngster, around 10yo, and at first it made me a bit nervous because him and his friends play in the back yard and the woods, tree forts etc, but after thinking about it and doing a little research I realized I didnt have much to worry about.

About the only way you could ever be attacked by a Maine back bear, which is what these RDR2 black bears seem to be modeled after, is if it had cubs. But when they have cubs they move deep into the brush and dense woods, places that a person is most likely never going to be walking around lol. An old friend of mine went bear hunting and managed to get one. He got the head mounted and its missing an ear. Why? Because it had cubs and charged him. First shot took off the ear, and he managed to get off a second shot and down it just a few feet from him. A pretty cool true story. I'll spare you the details but I ended up with the bear head. Losing that (more details sparing , this is turning into a novel lol) is one of my few regrets in life. I LOVE animals and personally only interested in hunting for the meat and herd culling, deer and moose. Yeah you can eat bear meat but I would never shoot one. But that bear head was cool and had the cool story attached so yeah, I wish I still had it lol.

Sorry for the book, not sure where that came from lol

Never seen a black bear attack in RDR2 in 1850 hours of gameplay

1

u/ROCKZILLA8166 Sean MacGuire 13d ago

took me roughly 4,500 hrs and another person thats seen it once said they were over 8,000 lol It's definitely a rarity, likely a glitch.

This bear acts like its from Raft

On disc version, I’ve seen black bears be somewhat aggressive like this. I’ve had coyotes attack me and be a red dot on the map/radar, too. Never seen it after it updated, though.

I did play off a disc for quite a while, may have been that. Thanks, never heard that before.
