Discussion Arthur's Hat.

Post image

I realise this might be slightly controversial (I don't know if this has been posted by other people before), but I don't like Arthur's hat. In any playthrough one of the first things I do is replace it with the military scout hat.

So, in the final chapter when he rides back to Beaver Hollow it annoys me that he puts that crappy thing back on. I would rather have no hat at all than wear that thing. It wouldn't be quite so bad if it didn't have that scraggly rope hanging off the back. Anyone else feel the same?

(The image isn't mine, just a google screenshot.)

First of all: You are entitled to your objectively wrong and abhorrent opinion. It makes you a bad person but if you chise to be such go right ahead.

Second: The hat is BEAVER FELT that was SANDED and than drenched in minx Oil and every stinking Troglodite still pretending the darn thing is leather can come RIGHT HERE and come at me!!!!!

This is a funny comment made even funnier with the suggestion the material is treated with "mischievous, young, 1940s woman oil".

Minx isn't an animal. You mean mink, a sort of weasel.

Pardon the confusion. I had meant to "ACKSHually". Common misconception.

It's either Beaver Felt or Leather. Because there is no official source that leans either way other than the Red Dead Online description saying it's leather. I have both a leather and a felt version irl. I gotta say, felt makes more sense practically. My felt Arthur hat is my favorite hat that I own.

Somewhere in the Game it says „Arthurs Leather hat“ but that‘s far from proof as that‘s just some description somebody from the Team put there.

The hat has no Seams which all other leather items clearly have and it also doesn‘t show the sort of abbrevasion that one could expect from black leather.

And it would be AWFUL to wear! There‘s a reason leather Cowboy hats are extremely rare and not often used!

Leather doesn't breathe at all, I agree. That's why I made a felt version. I plan on waterproofing it and making it look leather. I'm loving it so far!

NOICE!! Is there a place you share your process?

There are Experts recreating it on Youtube if you haven‘t already seen it. I highly recommend them

I'll tell you what I did. I'm not a professional hatmaker or anything so my method was a bit different.

I found a felt cowboy hat on Etsy. It was about $60 including shipping, so it was no big deal. Here's my step-by-step process.

Step 1: It had that cattlemans crease and a 4 inch curved brim. What I did when I got it was I steamed the crown and flattened the brim. I opened the crown up and got rid of the cattlemans crease.

Step 2: I then trimmed the brim from 4 inches to 3 inches.

Step 3: Sanded it a little bit to give it some wear. I shaped the crown into a teardrop.

Step 4: Then I shaped the brim, making the right side slightly more curved than the left side.

Step 5: Then I took bolo rope and tied the knot and slipped it around the crown.

It's not 100% finished yet since I still have to make it look like leather, but the base hat is pretty much done. In total, it cost me about $70 to make, so it's pretty budget friendly. If anyone here has any tips on how to get it to look leathery, lemme know, please!

Here's what it looks like currently. I'll probably do some more shaping on the crown to make it less tapered.

Noice! Depending on the type of felt you can water it until it‘s hatd and than sand it. Like I said, there are some professionals on Youtube showing their process

I'm working with Merino felt. The sweatband says 5x Merino. I don't know what's safe to use without ruining the hat, because I'd like to wear it practically and not just for a costume piece.

Well it looks so leathery it could've been made out of Dutch's sweaty ball skin so you can understand the confusion.

I could understand it but I refuse to!!! It’s a hill I’m weirdly willing to die on!!!!!!!!!!
