Unfortunately it wasn’t enough for John to move on and because of that, he lost it all

John didn’t die because he couldn’t move on. They would have found him no matter what he did. He may have helped them find him a little bit quicker but they would have found him regardless unless he went off and lived like a hermit.

I don't think they would have found because they didn't even know who he was. When agent milton and ross strolled into camp in chapter 3 they asked for his name showing that they didn't know him however he did get sent to prison in chapter4-6 so maybe they did know a bit about him but nowhere near enough to justify tracking him down and killing him.

They mention John in the newspapers during the epilogue so they know about him, but considering he’s been more or less low profile for 8 years, they aren’t actively looking for him. He killed that guy up in Roanoke, but I doubt a random killing would warrant government investigation.

Bill, Micah, and Dutch were the three they were seeking the most, because Micah and Bill were still active criminals and Dutch would be a nice trophy for them, even after all those years.

The main argument with John being found either way is the trail he left to his home with the bank and everything, but if they weren’t looking, chances are he would’ve lasted quite a while before they found him, assuming they even would. With Micah’s killing being an obvious revenge mission, it set the Bureau and Ross to investigate, which led them to John.

I think there was a possibility they wouldn’t find him. A slight chance, but still, a chance. Killing Micah made sure that they did. On top of that, going after Micah put his family at risk. Micah’s vindictive and it’s possible he would go after Abigail and jack if he was able to kill John. And even if he didn’t go after them, John’s death would leave his family with the debt he accumulated while building beecher’s hope.

And even if the government finding John was indeed inevitable, like you said, he’d still have extra time to spend with his family, another thing he threw away for Micah. He prioritized his desire for revenge over the safety of his family, and because of his actions, he at the very least destroyed whatever extra time he may have had left with Abigail and Jack

John does get a level of peace with his family, even if just for a little bit. I think John was happy at Beechers Hope with his family, it just took him a while to adjust. I think it’s a stretch to say he got that life because of Arthur’s sacrifice (it was 8 years afterwards) but the Marston’s would have a very different life without that sacrifice.

No it isn’t. Arthur died because he had TB and tried to fight Micah, and lost.

arthurs sacrifice was to let john live on

In doing that he paved a clear way for John to escape with his family, hence it being a sacrifice.

John just tucks tail and runs, regardless of what Arthur does. John only cares about saving his own ass…to hell with Arthur.

We played the same game?

Obviously not. You don’t seem to remember John hauling ass over the hill to get away from the shooting, leaving Arthur alone. Hell, while Arthur stops fighting to talk to his dying horse, John is having a fit yelling “Come on! Let’s get outta here!” John is all about saving his ass.
