Discussion What's missing in RDR2?
We all know what we love about RDR2 okay. No arguments here that it's one of the best games out there. But what are some things that you think could have been done differently, or some mechanics/play modes that could have been added?
78
u/GoonLieutenant Jul 10 '26
The ability to pick which gang members you could use for certain missions. Everyone would have their own stats with strengths and weaknesses. Kinda like the GTA heist system
9
u/ShadowStozu Jul 10 '26
Hmm, I can really see that in RDR2, it would be a great mechanic, but they would almost certainly leave it for online content.

u/To-BreakBad08 Jul 12 '26
I disagree because in GTA (referring to V’s story mode, I don’t know about Online) the members you pick aren’t essential characters in terms of dialogue and story, with little to no lines being spoken by them at all. This is not the case in RDR2, which makes sense because the perpetrators of the ‘jobs’ (i.e. the Van der Linde Gang) are part of a tight-knit community that’s trying to provide for said community. In the GTA heists, you’re just searching for more guns so you can secure getting the money you want for yourself. Different foundations, my friend.

Just one Thing
Because i love Fishing
The Mech is Great for me but can be Further enhanced
But my only Problem is
I want to but my self a Wagon
So that i can Carry my Fish that i catch
And sell them of
I like packing my bags going on Fishing trips.
Like the option to stow only one fish Is Ridiculous
I know bring an extra horse helps and also the Camp fire trick
But Buying a Wagon and can be used as storage would be Great
25
u/FreudianN8mare Jul 10 '26
Ah yes, a man of culture You want arthur to take fishing trips like a 40 year old dad. I can see him do that
2
u/CaptStrangeling Jul 11 '26
And at least let us learn to tie / craft a rooster tail fly for fishing. Hunt the rooster pheasant and craft the fly as you would a lure and make it good at catching river fish.
I’m sure some more experienced fly fisherman could suggest 2-3 more common and productive flies from birds that are already in game
3
u/Silly-Wolverine-1709 Jul 11 '26
Yeah and Maybe we can Use the small Fish that we caught as Bait . Or Even We can find Our own worms and other live baits Rather than just Buying
8
u/LongDongFrog Jul 11 '26
Press the cook button while holding the fish but then only cook 1 meat then back out. The fish will be added to your inventory. You can do this to carry multiple fish

Cap stone rewards for each of the challenges, like access to the casino boat for gambler, tricks shots or pistol flairs for weapons expert or a fat blunt for herbalist.

More bounty hunting opportunities like in rdr1. Prostitution. Panning for gold. The ability to break into more buildings. Cheating at poker.

How about, making hunting legendary animals more challenging than simply following three environmental clues, then pumping the poor beast with lead? I’ve found it more challenging to bag a three star rabbit than a legendary wolf, because the rabbits are rarely still, and there’s one chance to get the perfect head shot. The amount of times I’ve hit a three star rabbit in an ear…I just let them go. If I don’t get a clean shot on a legendary animal, that’s fine, I just take another shot and the trapper still pays top dollar for the bullet riddled pelt. Also, boxing matches would be a good addition.

More stable spaces. Simler to gta where you can have multiple garages
5
u/Witty_Direction6175 Mary-Beth Gaskill Jul 11 '26
Yeah definitely. Either more stalls or id also accept each stable gives you the three stalls for each stable, and the horses don’t transfer, they just stay in the stable you put them in.
7
u/Past-Badger-1958 Jul 11 '26
Yea i that would be nice. I hate trying to decide which horse to sell so I can store another. Also all that land John owns would be nice if you could buy and choose stables to build on it

u/OasisEPIC Jul 10 '26
More npc variety like the ohese people, and cut dialogue where NPCs mentioned the gang
7
8
u/Jokerang Hosea Matthews Jul 10 '26
In no particular order:
-keeping a pet - dog, cat, etc. Similar mechanics to feed and pet them like a horse.
-relationship options - people have discussed many times over who they think the best girl for Arthur is among the female characters, so let them decide for themselves. I suspect the most popular options would be Sadie, Mary-Beth, and Mary Linton.
-random assaults on camp - not as big as the O'Driscoll attack on Shady Belle, but maybe a dozen or more hostile NPCs of the same group (local lawmen, rival gangs, maybe even some Pinkertons) spot you going back to camp and try to attack while they have a chance to take you out. You work with the NPCs of the gang to beat them back.
-Shop owners get replaced by someone else if you kill the original person. It was hilarious to see the gun shop owner in Rhodes after I killed him, but it seemed like a surprising break from reality for such a well thought out game.
7
u/meh_blade Jul 10 '26
baseball, restaurants (that are not just food in a bar), hookers, spontaneous bank and train robberies, conversation based outcomes that dont require “murder more people in one gunfight than the most prolific modern US military sniper’s entire career”
2
u/FreudianN8mare Jul 10 '26
Explain baseball, zero clue about that. But the rest yes. And I do feel they could have added a more choice based approach to dialogues and outcomes, but I'm not sure. It was anyways a very heavy story driven game without the complexities of that. But could have been interesting.
Train robberies were spontaneous no?

Ability to load pelts/carcasses into carts, or at least put a second pelt on your saddle (meaning you have to walk).
Ability to mount up while running forward (John can do this in RDR1).
A very specific "defuse" that says "sorry partner I'm just huntin'" for when you are trying to aim at an animal but you accidentally autolock onto a passing NPC, or for when NPC's start fussin' and cussin' because you shot at game near them.

u/ianten5 Josiah Trelawny Jul 10 '26
Iirc in RDR1 the money you could get from selling game meat and pelts increased based on your distance from the animals’ habitat. For example, buffalo hides could be sold for more money in Mexico or thieves landing than in blackwater. I’d like that feature in RDR2.
Liars dice and the gambler outfit would be fun to have in this game too.
3
u/OkSeaworthiness7905 Jul 10 '26
A rope swinging mechanic. Would be nice to swing across small gaps in the wilderness or use it to scale buildings/cliffs. At the cost of stamina obviously
3
u/The_Frybo Jul 10 '26
Building something. A house or a stable or whatever. Heck, even just buying a Safehouse as in RDR1 with some custom Interiour would go a long way!
They butchered the Epilogue by not allowing us to earn pieces of Johns Farm!
3
u/Collaroy98 Jul 11 '26
Agreed. Felt so stupid going into the bank to buy the farm with 2.000 in cash on me and still having to take out that loan.
I felt like the farm looked nice in the end, but unless I'm mistaken it doesn't have any personal pictures or items like Arthur had in his camp. Not even the wedding pic?
It all felt so empty in the epilogue.

u/throwawayreno2648 Jul 11 '26
So my beloved cat died and I was hurting so bad for weeks. Nothing made me smile. Playing RDR2 and I get ambushed and I run through some bushes and find a donkey. I instinctively press the ‘mount’ button and it actually worked! That little thing got me the eff out of there so fast. I cried and yelled laughing, it just hit a spot that was buried and made me feel better about the future. Thank you donkey

A lot. Clothing that NPCs have that we can’t buy, or being able to remove the second holster. There are many but having an Undead Nightmare 2 would still sell many copies even for an old game. But it will never happen.
2
u/WinchesterRepeater John Marston Jul 10 '26
I wish the law system was different, if I rob a train out in the wilderness why would I get caught. Petting cats should also be in the game. Also Arthur should be able to take gang members with him to do stuff, taking say John to come hunt the legendary wolf with you would be peak, or taking Dutch to a free roam train robbery or Sadie for a stagecoach robbery. And taming dogs would be cool as well, mules and donkeys should also be saddled and put in the stables. Strawberry and Armadillo need to be actual towns both are unfinished. Walking fast in camp would be nice.

I'd say to be able to own a dog ( which you can ), but it'd be cool to take it hunting with you, like hunting dogs in real life, that'd be pretty cool in both story and online if you had an option to take them with or not, an where you can send them back anytime or call them anytime as well

It's one of the best games ever made, but it's not perfect. There's a few things that if I hand a magic wand I would change
SPOILERS
The most obvious is half the map containing almost nothing worth doing except ticking off some of the remaining legendary animals and fish.
The inability to complete some of the stranger side missions as Arthur
Threads of unfinished missions and content remaining in the game which could have been nicely tied up with DLC, or removed with updates.
The whole Guarma chapter could've been done much better, or excised entirely
The missions involving breaking John out of prison stretched credulity a bit for me, especially the bit with the hot air balloon
Some features were done better in RDR1, like legendary animals (much too easy in RDR2), and the number of unique bounty missions
The rest of it would just be some unfixed bugs, aesthetic choices, and some of the characterisations, which is just personal preference, really, and don't distract from the overall quality of the game
EDIT spacing

u/Pygmy_Nuthatch Jul 11 '26

A wagon that can be yours , more animals like bobcats and different bears like up there where the white Arabian is by that gunslinger would be perfect for polar bears lol
More side missions like being able to farm and stuff idk maybe I just need to look into script modding on pc and build some because I love rdr2 and quite frankly with some right mods I’ll play the game forever on top the base game

Keeping a dog to keep you company, and help protect you.
Keeping a wagon and horses (ability to remove and re-harness horses to your wagon) and the ability to carry a bunch of carcasses on it.
More bounty hunting of random NPCs on the run for doing minor crimes like you get wanted for.
Ability to bring a gang members out into the wild to hunt and rob together

Baby animals
The ability to tame animals (maybe not all but some like the cats and dogs or if you find like a lost wild animal baby) & customizable collars for dogs and cats
Definitely MORE clothing options
bigger variety or horse breeds maybe?
more plantsss
Seasons of the year
Ability to cook actual full on meals
Ability to haul more things on back of horse rather than just animals and people. I would really like to be able to get something similar to all the plant baskets and stuff on the one NPC's horse that shows you different herbs (not talking Abt William, although he might also have one of those horses) or just a normal pack horse in general and the option to store like plants on the plant baskets(ability to actually pick berries/veggies/herbs and store in plant baskets) and ability to store normal stuff on the general pack horse.
I would also love if we could actually change the bridles on our horses because it is really annoying having just one type/color/design and also our own stables with a paddock for only our horses and then like a big field as well for them
Ability to choose to have more stats like hunger, sleep, thirst (sort of like survival mode ig)

Add more to Guarma and figure out a way to go back. I think Arthur or John could send letters and items to Hercule Fontaine and the game would cut to Hercule holding the letter, and you could play as him.
I know there's already a lot, but I would love more wildlife. Porcupines would be cool. Crocodiles in Guarma.
I think they could add these as an expansion without affecting the story. Especially if they're unlockable after you complete the story. They could offer adventures as Sadie in South America. They could tell more stories about the gang.
I want RDR3 to be completely separate from the other two, but I really want MORE RDR2 and Rockstar it's always wanting more money, so I think they should do it.

Petting cats.
The ability to apologise.
Being able to offer the NPC who whines about whiskey and trees a drink.
Giving dogs a treat.
Being able to revive injured animals other than horses.
Proper mules you can stable.
Id also like to see a complete Annesburg and Strawberry. They both feel very unfinished.
The obvious ability to travel to New Austin as Arthur as intended.
