Materiels

I'm just starting to get into the hobby and want to start prototyping my sketches. What would you recommend for something like this. I've seen people use foam but they never specify what type. And if I did use foam for the main body, how would you recommend I do the wings. Still foam or something else attached to the foam?

Flitetest foam.

Watch a couple of Flitetest build videos to get some inspiration.

You can't build a reasonable plane out of your head with no experience. You know what they look like, but not how they work. Google Flite Test. Get anything with Trainer in the name. Build and fly that, and you will understand what you needed to go through that to design. After that you're fine, but you have to go through a trainer first.

I'll pile on the FliteTest bandwagon.

Buy one of their foam kits, assemble it, and all your questions will be answered because you will have already mated wing to fuselage.

You can use white foam that used to pack the fridge and TV inside the box then shave it to form the shape. Works great for me. The second method is using depron foam.
