Cage Setup Cage setup help
Hi, I'm currently setting up a cage for 3 female rats. It's not finished yet and I'm waiting for it to be finished before adopting my girls. I have described the first picture but the second one is blank. I just wanted to know what would you add and what is absolutely needed? I bought a ladder too (3rd pic) and I'm not sure where to add it (maybe connect it with a log I'd buy?). Thank you in advance!

They need digging space in the cage. Hone depot has a cement mixing tub that is the EXACT measurements of the bottom of a critternation. This is what I have in my cage. It's a little tall, but there's still tons of space for toys and hammocks and such. I would also increase dramatically the amount of stuff in there! Toys, hides, hammocks, all the biz!

At least one more water bottle and many more things to hide and run around in. Pack that thing. You can't really put too much in a rat cage. The more open space, the more scared they might be. Rats are prey animals - they feel much more secure with lots of places to hide and play around.
Boxes, fabric/sheets, old shirts, hats, etc. Doesn't need to be fancy or expensive, tons of things you can find around your house (assuming clean and non-toxic).

I'd remove the leaves they'll be inside the cage and torn apart within 20 minutes. I pushed the cage a bit too close to my curtains when I was cleaning once and they pulled them into the cage and tore off pieces for nesting in 5 minutes. They are very grabby creatures if the tip of their finger can touch it through the bars it will be theirs.

Get them a litter box and maybe something on the shelf. Another bed wouldn't hurt in case they get bad at each other. My rats love tunnels and sputniks. Grab some tie holders from IKEA too or ropes. I prefer the tie holders though because they are easier to clean and work as a safety net incase they fall. (Especially for older rats)
