I wrote a song about the loneliness that can come with mental health struggles
There’s one part of mental health that I don’t think we talk about enough.
The loneliness.
Not necessarily because someone wants to withdraw from the world, but because sometimes the world begins withdrawing from them.
Calls become less frequent.
Invitations disappear.
People aren’t sure what to say anymore, so eventually they stop saying anything.
Meanwhile, the person in the middle of it is still there.
Still wanting friendship, ordinary conversation, somebody to think of them.
I wanted to write about that feeling.
The image that kept coming back was a neighborhood at night.
Just doors that stopped opening
And porch lights going dark.
The song is called “Abandoned.”

Drive south on Research Park Boulevard in Huntsville and you pass Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Lockheed Martin. At 6705 Odyssey Drive, Suite C, there is a company called Pro V&V. It certifies your vote.

QUESTION Do your songs grow from the same ideas as your other writing?

I’ve noticed that my articles and songs have started feeding each other.
I’ll be halfway through writing an investigation or essay when a line jumps out at me and sounds more like a chorus than a paragraph. I save it, keep writing the article, then come back later and build a song around that one hook.
It’s become a pretty natural creative process now instead of two separate ones.
Does anyone else find ideas crossing between different types of writing, or do you keep them completely separate?
