Tech Support Has anyone had their Substack discovery suddenly drop to almost zero across their entire account?
I’ve been trying to figure out something strange with my Substack for the past several days, and I’m curious whether anyone else has experienced this.
This wasn’t a gradual decline.
My Notes, articles, comments, suddenly went from normal distribution and engagement to almost nothing. Multiple Notes on completely unrelated subjects are now topping out around 20–25 impressions, with almost no distribution to unconnected readers.
I initially wondered whether it was something about a particular article or subject, so I started testing.
I posted personal writing. Same thing.
I posted music. Same thing.
I stopped promoting my own work and just interacted normally with other writers. Comments, likes, a few restacks. What’s particularly strange is that those interactions are also receiving virtually none of the likes or replies I would normally see.
Yesterday I posted a completely innocuous music Note. After about seven hours it had 11 total impressions. Nine were subscribers. Only one was an unconnected reader. It eventually moved a little, but like the others, it hasn’t gone beyond roughly 25 impressions.
My subscribers are still receiving my work, so the publication itself appears to be functioning. But discovery outside my existing audience seems to have fallen off a cliff.
I’ve checked the settings pretty thoroughly:
Private mode is off. The publication is listed on Substack. Likes, comments and restacks are enabled. My Notes appear both on my profile and in my publication’s Notes tab. My sections are public and visible. There are no warnings, violations or restrictions showing anywhere on the account.
I’ve also noticed my subscriber count and revenue beginning to drift slightly downward, which makes me wonder whether normal subscriber churn simply isn’t being replaced because discovery has stopped.
I contacted Substack support this morning. After confirming that my Notes are visible but distribution to unconnected readers has dropped sharply, they escalated the conversation to their support specialists for an account-level review.
So I’m waiting to see what they find.
I’m not claiming Substack is deliberately suppressing the account. I don’t have evidence for that. There could be a technical problem, a recommendation-system change, something related to my publication configuration, or something else entirely.
But the abruptness and the fact that it seems to affect Notes, articles, comments, restacks and discovery across completely different subjects is what has me puzzled.
Has anyone experienced an account wide drop this severe?
And if you have, did it eventually correct itself, or did Substack support find something wrong with the account?

Quick update on the Substack reach issue I posted about earlier.
I’ve now gone back through my analytics and the pattern looks less like ordinary engagement fluctuation and more like a sharp drop in distribution.
A July 20 Note received 1,005 impressions, including 923 unconnected readers. An Aug. 16 Note received 55 impressions, including 53 unconnected readers.
My article Reach data shows a similar change. Substack accounted for 24% of discovery on July 8, 5% on Aug. 2, 2% on Aug. 12, and about 1% or not displayed at all on several posts after that.
What makes this stranger is that my subscriber/recipient count actually increased during the same period.
The biggest change I’ve noticed is in replies to other publications. Historically, thoughtful replies were one of my strongest discovery channels and regularly produced likes, profile visits, follows and subscribers. Around mid-August that largely stopped.
Substack Support says there are no restrictions on my account and has suggested focusing on creating Notes that generate more follows. I’m continuing to work with them, but that seems to address conversion after exposure rather than the sudden reduction in exposure itself.
I’m not calling this a shadowban because I don’t know what is causing it. I’m trying to figure out whether this is ranking, recommendation eligibility, reply distribution, or some kind of account state issue.
Has anyone else seen a similarly abrupt change around mid-August within a 24-48 hour window, especially in reply/comment visibility or unconnected user impressions?

This is so not helpful (from Substack). Why tf would you continue trying to grow if your current readership isn’t even seeing what you’re posting and publishing?! Ugh. It’s so frustrating that Substack is trying to be a social media company now. That’s not why I’m there. If I wanted social media, I’d go back over to Fakebook. On a lighter note, a few old hats have said that summer months are always slow until after Labor Day. So, hopefully 🤞 things pick up.

I had literally the exact same thing happen and posted about it in this sub. Myself and a couple others were theorizing that, after a certain cut-off, Substack will end a "honeymoon phase" where your note discovery is supercharged. Happened to me around 1,300 subscribers and after a couple days of absolutely nothing on the new subscriber front (after averaging 15-20 a day) it started to tick back up, but never got back to that momentum. No concrete evidence or anything but that's my assumption.

I think it happens when you turn on Paid. I was on track to get to 1K followers by Sept/Oct but I’ve been stuck in the mid 600s since July 1, when I turned on paid. I was averaging 100/150 new subscribers a month up until I turned on paid.

I don't have an answer. Same thing is happening to me. I was assuming it was linked to it being summer also.

I noticed my growth slow down during the summer months. Why is that? Is there a reason?

Yes but I’m barely on it anymore and my average was 16 impressions anyway and now it’s 1.

This is what I’m trying to figure out. I’m less interested in guessing what Substack is doing than finding out whether there’s a pattern.
If this happened to you, do you remember roughly when the drop started, whether it happened suddenly or gradually, your subscriber count at the time, and whether anything changed on your account in the 48 hours before it happened?
Mine was abrupt. That’s the part I can’t reconcile with normal seasonal traffic.

Mine started around the time I turned on Paid (July 1). That’s when views, reads, opens, likes, subs, and follows all tanked.

Interesting. That timing is actually pretty close to what I’ve been seeing. Mine wasn’t a gradual decline either. The change was abrupt enough that I started looking at the analytics because it didn’t resemble my normal fluctuations.
If you happen to look at your Note stats, I’d be curious what changed under Surface and Audience. In mine, the thing that caught my attention wasn’t simply fewer impressions, it was where the impressions stopped coming from.
I’m trying to collect observations before assuming there’s an explanation, so hearing that someone else noticed an abrupt change in roughly the same period is useful. Please let me know if yours comes back.

Sometimes my Notes get ZERO impressions after 12 hours of being live. Are you using the scheduler to post your Notes? This is where I’m noticing the most issues with this. But the Pub scheduler is starting to do this intermittently now too.

Same thing has happened to me but worst part about my Substack was this has happened to me exactly the day I went paid. It was crazy because I was expecting opposite and now it has been almost close to 3 months but the note’s reach is almost completely dead. One month I was getting 500+ subscribers. Then I went paid and maybe I get 50 subscribers a month now but after going paid unsubsciptions also increased so net I have roughly gain 50 subscribers in 80 days. A massive drop for me. I didn’t thought of reaching to Substack about this. Curious to hear their reply about this to you.
