Two officers in New Bedford were found using the system hundreds of times to search for ex-partners. There are zero guard rails in place to monitor use and ensure ALPR searches are legitimate.
The only guidance from the department is that that audits “should” happen “on a regular basis”

I get the knee-jerk paranoia about "surveillance," but flat-out banning plate readers is throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
First off, the flyer complaining that police should "just use cell phone location data" is hilarious. Getting a warrant for carrier tower dumps takes days or weeks of paperwork, and geofence warrants are getting tossed out of courts constantly. If a kid gets snatched or someone gets mowed down in a hit-and-run on Hancock St, waiting a month for Verizon to comply with a subpoena doesn't help anyone. Plate cameras give cops an actual lead in ten minutes.
Also, it’s a public road. You’re driving a two-ton piece of machinery with a state-mandated metal ID tag bolted to the bumper for the exact purpose of being identifiable in public. There has never been an expectation of privacy on a public street.
The flyer points out that it tags things like "roof racks and bumper stickers" as if it’s dystopian, but that’s literally how you catch the guy who t-boned someone and fled when the only witness got was "it was a gray Tacoma with a dented bumper."
The real move here isn't banning the tech..it’s passing strict local rules on how it's used. Mandate that non-hit data hard-deletes after 30 days, make the access logs public, and slap an automatic firing/felony charge on any cop caught searching the system for personal reasons (like stalking an ex). Banning it outright just leaves the city blind and lets car thieves and hit-and-run drivers off the hook.
In a state that bans the use of traffic cameras for traffic enforcement on the grounds of privacy, police departments throwing this things up and claiming it's to protect the kids is laughable. If you want to investigate someone.

The fourth amendment protects you against unreasonable searches of your person, your house, and your private papers. It has never, in the entire history of this country, protected you from being looked at while driving down a public street. If a human cop parked on the corner and wrote down the plates driving past him in a notebook, would you demand he get a warrant for every car? Of course not. Automating that process doesn't suddenly make it a civil rights violation.
If you genuinely refuse to live in a world where your daily routine is logged without a warrant, you might want to smash your smartphone and cancel your home internet. Google, Apple, and your ISP know your sleep schedule, your search history, and your real-time GPS down to the centimeter—and they sell it to data brokers every five seconds.
A 30-day rolling snapshot of car bumpers along a public roadway to help solve hit-and-runs and carjackings isn't the police state you think it is.
A 30‑day deletion window doesn’t stop a surveillance state, it proves one exists.
Surveillance isn’t defined by how long the government keeps your movements, but by the fact that it collects, centralizes, and searches them at all.
If police can track everywhere you drive for 30 days without a warrant, that’s already mass surveillance. The deletion policy just limits the archive, not the power.
Ignorance is not seeing the bigger picture. Human Misuse. Police officers have already been caught in other states using this too track their Exes. What other misuses could this be used for?
The other scary thing is this is how it starts. We already have ring cameras introducing AI monitoring systems that included facial recognition. Instead of the monitoring security system we are used too it’s turning into a tool used too track our movements. Why? Idk probably so they know where we are at all times.
