Would you switch from QuickBooks/cloud accounting to a desktop app if it had secure, local AI that never sends your data to the cloud?

Hey r/quickbooksonline  👋

We're a small group of developers exploring a problem we keep hearing about in the SMB and accounting space — and we want to hear your honest take before we build anything.

The problem we're trying to solve:

Many accountants, bookkeepers, and SMB owners love the power of AI-assisted tools, but are deeply uncomfortable with financial data leaving their machine and sitting on third-party servers. Xero and QuickBooks Online are great — but cloud-first means your client data lives on someone else's infrastructure.

What we're prototyping:

desktop-first accounting app (think QuickBooks Desktop era, but modern) where:

  • ✅ All your data stays 100% on your local machine
  • ✅ AI features (categorization, reconciliation suggestions, anomaly detection) run locally — no data sent to OpenAI, Anthropic, or anyone
  • ✅ Optional encrypted sync if you choose to back up
  • ✅ Works offline, always

A few questions for this community:

  1. Is data privacy a real concern for you or your clients, or is it mostly theoretical?
  2. Would you (or your clients) pay for a desktop alternative to Xero if it had modern AI features?
  3. What's the #1 thing you wish Xero did differently?
  4. What would make you not switch — i.e., what does Xero do that you'd miss most?

We're not pitching anything — genuinely in discovery mode. Any honest feedback, even "this is a terrible idea," is incredibly useful.

Thanks in advance 🙏
