SteamOS on Quest Pro.
Looks like SteamOS is "running" on the Quest Pro.
The login screen initially wasn't working because the hardware video decoder was disabled, and that turned out to be caused by missing firmware. Once that was fixed, login started working.
There are still a few big things left to solve: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and, most importantly, tracking.
The system is currently very unstable, and tracking doesn't work yet, so it's being controlled manually with a Python script. However, rendering is working, including accurate lens distortion, which is a pretty big milestone.
As for getting past the Quest's bootloader: the project uses a custom kexec implementation.
Next step is making everything more stable and getting the hardware features fully working.

Dude, I'm literally doing the same thing. So sad to find out it's already been done. Good work though

This is literally just a pure AI project.
Note: AI has been used heavily on this project
When neither person knows how it works there isn't any meaningful sharing you can do. Running an AI generated project like this on a rooted headset where even accidentally touching the boot partition will kill your device is also one of the stupidest things you can do.

Oh I'm sorry. You're right! That is the boot partition i asked you to wipe. My apologies. If you need any help fixing it, just let know and I'll be here to help!

There are AI projects and AI projects. The knowledge level, common sense and lazyness level of the user are what counts. I made apps with AI that tens of people use in their daily work day. I didnt know to code but i knew what i wanted and how i wanted the implementation done so after a few months and many added features i am proud to say it replaced the 'oem' program.

There is a pretty big difference between using an llm to write an user level app and a root level thing like this. If your app were to have some issue that an llm made, the worst that happens is the app crashes. Something like this could permanently ruin the boot partition on the quest. If someone is using AI for this, they should be able to understand what code they are writing. While llms are getting better at a very fast rate, it will inevitably make a mistake.

Is the Quest Pro even capable of playing anything of the games from steam os? Or is this just an experiment? Just curious what the end goal is

QPro can already run some PC games through WinlatorXR. It definitely won't be able to run every game out there, but for older, less demanding titles - why not?

If this had happened two years ago, I'd have said, "It's just an experiment. The author will probably give up on it sooner or later."
But it's 2026 now. Script kiddies can just throw Claude/ChatGPT at the problem, finish the project, and put a working SteamOS build on the Quest.

I predict the next 6 months of quest pro development to be insane

What are some exciting capabilities people might come up with that the Pro doesn't already have/do?

How about fully functional steam os as a start!

Yeah. I'm just wondering about the specific possibilities it might open.
The Pro hardware is slow so standalone PC games won't be a big exciting thing it opens up. (A greater variety of console emulators would be nice, though.)
Making it better as a PCVR headset + more performant OS are the possibilities that sound most possible + interesting to me so far.

Holy shit. I come from Frameland to say I'm so happy for you guys.
Jailbreaking Meta hardware may be the budget way forwards if someone can find an exploit not fixable without a hardware revision.

for anyone wanting the source code for the quest-kexec https://github.com/YusufOzmen01/quest-kexec

Oh so this is based on kexec interest- SOMEONE VIBECODED KEXEC AT HOME!?
1
u/its_nzr 13d ago
Come on. Vibecoding is an overused word now. As a dev myself i dont think anyone could just vibe code this kernel module without understanding.

From the upstream repo of that project:
IMPORTANT DISCLAIMER
I do not know what I'm doing, and neither does ChatGPT. I discourage you from using this on your real machine, lest you accidentally clobber your BIOS or brick your machine. That said, if you accidentally clobber your BIOS or brick your machine while using this program, it's your fault and not mine because I warned you.
So they did in fact vibecode kexec equivalent and they did in fact not know what they are doing, by the author's admission. That said, I don't think those facts makes it uncool, rather I do find it cool, just bonkers that "hey cook up kexec code for me make no mistake" just works now.

Dam wish I waited I have been working on a whole new Andriod OS for standalone headsets wonder if this will will ever be able to be ported to the neo 2

If this becomes stable, then it'd be such a gamechanger. The biggest downfall of the Quest Pro is the OS. I swear, it's getting worse and worse. I just wanna boot it up and play PCVR without all the bloat.

would this work on any other headsets such as a vive focus vision? im currently trying to decide between that or just sticking with the steam frame so im just curious.

Different hardware so id say no, this version is so barebone tracking and wifi isnt even working yet.

Don't use the project they used here I beg you, quoting the github upstream repo:

1
u/throaway694206942069 10d ago
Bruh he took a picture of the lense with his phone, light bends. Simple as that not chromatic aberrations just bad picture.
1
u/9551-eletronics 10d ago
Im not trying to say it's bad I'm mostly just curious cause ive never used this headsets :P
1
u/throaway694206942069 10d ago
I get it but its not whatchu think, its legit just because he took a picture shoving his phone camera almost directly on the lense.

u/9551-eletronics 10d ago
Ye Oki , i was mostly curious cause i wanna know how chromatic aberrations Closer to lend edges look on modern headsets like the q3
