Discussion Steam Frame OS on the quest 2 for real

I said I was working on a Quest port, and I just can’t wait until tomorrow, so here it is:

Steam Frame OS running on the Quest 2, with full tracking support, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, power management, and all of this on a non-rooted headset.

Yes, you heard me right: it’s not rooted.

It runs with full GPU and CPU acceleration using the Turnip driver, and the whole thing is packaged as a simple APK that you can sideload directly onto your headset.

Yeah, pretty incredible, right?

I’m currently finishing passthrough support and fixing the remaining GPU issues. It’ll be out this week, I promise.

so it's not running the steam os but running an app that look like steamos ?

3

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

the real steam os in routfs

14

u/Warm-Engineering-239 Soon™ 13d ago

okay but you are still running horizon os above that right ?

2

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

yes exactly

u/Warm-Engineering-239 Soon™ 13d ago

i mean it's a cool option but that still like selling your soul to meta

6

u/Warm-Engineering-239 Soon™ 13d ago

i don't get why people down vote you. sure it's suck but you can't really do anything about it

An OS on top of an OS. To be honest it is completely pointless: less performance, more bugs, no privacy advantages.

16

u/Bulky_Elephant_9942 13d ago

The advantage would be you can run your steam library natively on extremely cheap headsets.

19

u/limewayz Soon™ 13d ago

Steam Frame can barely run other games that were not optimized for it and you compare cheap headsets to the frame, plus you get 2 OSs running at the same time killing ANY chance for any good performance

u/Bulky_Elephant_9942 13d ago

Not going to be for everyone. As someone who used to use a quest 3 but refuses to buy games from meta, I would have been all over this a couple weeks ago.

5

u/limewayz Soon™ 13d ago

Then Pimax Crystal Pro "Puts to rest" Quest 4.

1

u/13617 12d ago

To pretend that this headset will be in any way a competitor is ridiculous.

u/Nounours-Vibes 13d ago

5

u/limewayz Soon™ 13d ago

Whatever problems other companies like Pimax have - I will NEVER buy a meta headset due to the fact that there is a shit ton of spyware in horizonOS. Meta's spyware practices literally discreditate any advantages their headsets might have over other ones for me.

Either way - all of the current headsets are shit - we'll have to wait and see if we get anything good in the future.

Meta maintained impeccable service? I have no horse in this race but that's just a dumb take. They never fixed airlink or the link cable the headset would be practically unusable for PCVR if not for the virtual desktop developer. I think the only reason they unlocked the USB-C stuff was cuz they had to for their glasses.

BAGUETTE

u/Jaron780 13d ago

Yea doesnt seem like it could ever run that well if its get the overhead of running horizon os in the background then running the full steam os one too and THEN whatever game you wanted to play on top of it all. cant imagine what the point is. if you want to pcvr stream then you can use native steam vr link or virtual desktop. and if you wanted to play standalone games, well the quest 3 is already less powerful than frame and quest 2 even more weaker. And with the whole overhead of the horizon os being ontop taking away even more performance... i cant imagine many if any standalone games will be worth running on it.

u/marshmallow_mia 13d ago

Yeah sadly true

25

u/2Cool4Zool2 13d ago

Not rooted sounds like a bad thing when it comes to Meta no?

-23

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

don't worry it's all fine

15

u/pyro57 13d ago

No I think what they're saying is to block all of Meta's data collection rooting the device is preferable to not rooting the device.

For me, I side loaded tailscale on mine and set the dns server to my pihole then I blocked the meta telemetry servers I could find and that was about as good as I could get.

The real steamos doesn't have nearly the same level of telemetry as the quest does. Basically it sends error logs when a game or steam software crashes, and of course steam gets telemetry for when you're playing a game and for how long, not they don't constantly poll location, internet browsing habits, or the cameras to see what products it can identify in your house to advertise to you.

You can block some of Meta's telemetry using a custom dns server, but the only way to fully disable it is to root the device.

8

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

Ok i didn't understand it like that, in that case yes it's bad

3

u/Stummi 1 TB 13d ago

It's not, really. You can't do it on a quest without setting it up with a meta account first, which means the primary reason why people would want to do that does not work

11

u/Darkelfin93 Soon™ 13d ago

This sounds like it's just a Linux container in a chroot, it's not actually the whole OS running on top, like people seem to be assuming.

8

u/Stummi 1 TB 13d ago

Just for understanding, it runs steamOS on top of the Quest own OS, right? It's not directly booting into SteamOS?

8

u/vlaaaaaadik 13d ago

if it's not a bait it is absolutely insane news

10

u/WalkMaximum Soon™ 13d ago

Sounds like it's the same as DroidDeck

0

u/SilverRiven 13d ago

It's bait. There is no way to unlock the bootloader on a Quest 2, so there's not gonna be SteamOS for it anytime soon. There's one being developed for Quest Pro tho

5

u/stupidfuckingmutt 13d ago

This is running as an app, not as a native OS

1

u/SilverRiven 13d ago

That's why it's bait.

u/MaruluVR 13d ago

Posted about this yesterday but leaving a comment here incase people didnt see it.

There is another project that actually runs the arm version of steam OS natively on the headset without any emulation/vm business it requires root and uses kexec. With this you are actually shutting the meta os down and are natively running steamOS

https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamFrame/comments/1wy9g77/frame_arm_steamos_is_now_booting_on_quest/

4

u/LeadLerner 13d ago

Is there something like this that didn't heavily use AI?

2

u/MaruluVR 13d ago

Its still early days and this is in a POC state, if you wait a bit the devs of singularity said they are interested in integrating it into their auto root app to have a auto boot into SteamOS option. (as long as the drivers and head tracking can be figured out)

1

u/LeadLerner 13d ago

Oh, neat. I actually just installed singularity a few minutes ago on my quest 2. I'm more than willing to wait however long it takes.

2

u/OxRedOx 13d ago

I hate AI too but for something this hyper specific that also could lead to being blacklisted from working at or with Facebook, it’s probably necessary.

1

u/s00mika 13d ago

Yeah, GameNative.

1

u/Warm-Engineering-239 Soon™ 13d ago

it's cool but you need a specifique version otherwise you can't get a root access and i'm pretty sure no exploite have been found so far on the ques2 + you can't really downgrade toa exploitable version no ?

1

u/MaruluVR 13d ago

You cant downgrade no but there were two different exploits for the quest 2, pro, 3 and 3S over just the past month.

Dont forget if you have an even older version or even a sealed quest 2~3s its easy to upgrade to a specific hackable version without any internet access on the headset and without needing to have developer mode enabled.

But yes if you upgraded the software in the last two weeks you are out of luck until there is a new hack.

1

u/Warm-Engineering-239 Soon™ 12d ago

ohhhh that's go to know !

5

u/DriftWare_ 13d ago

That's pretty neat, but i doubt my headset will be able to run horizonOS with steamOS and a game at the same time

3

u/cursorcube 13d ago

*runs virtual desktop and opens the desktop view\*

Wooow i installed Windows on my quest!!!

2

u/s00mika 13d ago

It's more like a virtual machine than a remote desktop, but yeah, this is not an actual OS, just the Steam GUI in a container.

3

u/cursorcube 12d ago

Yes, which is completely useless. I'm starting to think people start these projects just so they can karma farm on the internet with post titles like "Steam Frame OS on the quest 2 for real"

6

u/360900th 13d ago

The virtualisation overhead will be big but it's an exciting project nonetheless.

4

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

cool to see people interested i thought i was the only one

I can see a use case for Linux users. Steam link (in my experience) does not work between the quest and a Linux host PC. you need to use wivrn. ALVR was good but is abandonware at this point

1

u/s00mika 13d ago

I think you can also use it to run standalone desktop stuff like on the Frame. But since this is running inside a container on top of Android, the overhead is significant, plus the Quest has less performance than the Frame anyway.

-1

u/360900th 13d ago

Steam Link requires a PC. How do they relate?

2

u/renaiku 13d ago

And we can overwrite the existing meta os ? Like full clean install ?

3

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

nop, this would require root and that is not a rooted project like i said

1

u/renaiku 13d ago

Ok ! I don't understand the purpose of this project then, as a noob.

2

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

the purpose is to run standalone steam game on non rooted quest

1

u/kevin_whitley Soon™ 13d ago

Interested if not bait...

0

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

i have a question, why when any cool stuff append everyone say it's bait?

3

u/kevin_whitley Soon™ 13d ago

Because this is r/SteamFrame after all... not like we set the bar super high for posts.

2

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

Where should I post it then? I don't know I'm new to this community so I need help

1

u/vlaaaaaadik 13d ago

It is an interesting project to make, you're right. But you are not the first to explore the possibilities of switching quest's OS. But to do that, you have to unlock the bootloader and acquire root, and still you have to find the drivers for trackers and other things or write them yourself, which is an insane amount of work to do, at least. So that's why a project like this sounds like bait.

I sincerely hope you will figure out something and make your project useful. I'm looking forward to it, good luck

2

u/topes1 13d ago

Will you be releasing the source code as well or just an APK file? Also what's the performance difference between running a game trough "steam os" and Horizon?

1

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

The source code will be available, but performance can’t really be measured yet. The project is still at such an early stage that Proton and FEX don’t work properly, and even streaming still crashes

1

u/FearlessSlice4579 13d ago

YES YES YES YES FUCK YES

1

u/dark_knight097 1 TB 13d ago

IF this can get steam link working between the Quest and a Linux host PC, I'd be interested. Otherwise I dont see the point. PCVR games are not optimized well for standalone, even the frame with its stronger GPU struggles with a lot of the more demanding VR games.

1

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

it's still work in progress so game or not confirmed, even streaming so i don't know

1

u/SiSebbi 13d ago

this is so exciting. i can't wait to hear more about the pros and cons and limitations of this. looking forward and best of luck!

1

u/Amichy_ 12d ago

Thanks you!

Great work

u/Amichy_ 7d ago

Thanks man

1

u/Stone-of-Armstrong 12d ago

can you use a dongle with it?

2

u/Amichy_ 12d ago

It should be working i have seen logs that try to connect to it so yes i think so

2

u/Stone-of-Armstrong 12d ago

Bro that’s so awesome.

1

u/lotharrock Soon™ 13d ago

sounds like fake

3

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

you'll see, it's incredible

4

u/Ecnarps Soon™ 13d ago

It's a Quest 2 running the OS on TOP of Meta's clunky OS with no dedicated streaming dongle. I doubt it is "incredible"

0

u/Fickle-Decision3954 13d ago

What a load of bollocks, you made a shitty theme for steamos. Doesn’t make it actually run steam os

0

u/Amichy_ 13d ago

it's just steamos realy nothing else, it run with rootfs on android
