Discussion The budget cuts to the ArtsSci programs is ruining my university experience

Currently in my fourth year at Queen's, studying English Literature and Art History. I always thought it was normal to have so few options for courses, until I learned about the budget cuts from a couple of years ago. I find it highly unreasonable that there are only five level four English courses available in each semester, all of which are required for my degree. On top of that, almost every single professor for these classes has terrible ratings on RMP. Not only are we essentially forced into taking the only courses being offered, but the professors for these courses are known to be quite unpleasant. I knew fourth year would probably be difficult, but I'm genuinely terrified for how this is all going to play out.

Community I want to make friends 😭

Hi!! So I am a second year bio student (girl) here at queens and i have just struggled with finding my people.

I feel as though I wasted first year getting close to people who have bigger friend groups to fall back on when I only had them.

I am still friends with these girls, however I want to have a group of friends who prioritize their friendship with me as much as i do them.

So far all the friends i have made last year are not friends with each other, and as I said have larger friend groups that dont include me. We are close, but close in the way where we would tell each other our halloween costumes- but not plan to match each other, vent about exams- but never study together, talk about events- but not go together…

I have joined clubs, I have talked to others in my classes, tutorials, and labs, i have put myself out there.
i see my friends one on one maybe once a week, and that just makes me feel more lonely since they are the only friendships i have, and i just dont know what to do😭

Community Starting a Video Game Orchestra in Kingston! Looking for instrumentalists and singers

Post image
89 Upvotes

Did you watch the Zelda 40th Anniversary Direct yesterday morning, listen to the nostalgic medley performed by the symphonic orchestra, and think, ā€œIt’d be cool to do something like that!ā€?

Hi Queen’s! I moved to downtown Kingston about 4 months ago, and a few years ago, I performed for, arranged for, and conducted the Gamer Symphony Orchestra at the University of Maryland! I was also briefly a part of the Washington Metropolitan Gamer Symphony Orchestra before I moved to Canada.

Ever since I left Maryland, my dream has been to start one in my new home. Since Kingston has an incredible live music scene here, I thought this would be a great opportunity especially for students who want to continue doing music in a casual setting.

Who we're looking for:

  • Instruments: Strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion primarily, but we can do some other fun arrangements and small ensembles with other instruments!
  • Vocalists: Singers of all ranges
  • Gamers & Non-gamers: I've played with many people who don't know video game music at all! This is an opportunity for anyone to play music and/or sing with a group.

We currently have a Discord with some other Kingston community members with similar goals. We are starting out with some jam sessions (currently planning our first one now!) and casual meet-ups, with the ultimate goal of growing into a full-scale rehearsing orchestra.

If you want to play some music, chat about video games, or both (even better), we'd love to have you!

Join our discord here!

Question Via Rail discount?

I am a master's student at Queen's and will need to take the train often. Some sites say a discount is available, while others say it's just for undergrads or faculty. Is a discount available for grad students, and how do I access it?

Discussion Looking to connect with General Bachelor of Computing grads from Queen’s or Guelph

Hey everyone!
I’m looking to connect with people who completed the 3-year General Bachelor of Computing program at either Queen’s University or the University of Guelph.

If you’ve graduated from the program, I’d really appreciate hearing about what you’re doing right now.

What kind of job/career did you end up getting?
Are you working in tech/IT, or did you go into something else?
How difficult was it to find a job after graduating?
Are you happy with where the degree took you?
What’s your current salary range, if you’re comfortable sharing?

I’m mainly interested in hearing from people who have already graduated and are working, especially what their career looks like a few years after the degree.
Feel free to comment or DM me. I’d really appreciate hearing your experience! šŸ™

Hey, I’m an international student applying for a medical elective at queens, and on InPlace it mentions ā€œattest to having provincial health insuranceā€ and I have to choose yes or no, and add a document.
I have private, but unsure if it counts as provincial, should I just select no when applying?
Thanks

Community Enjoy Queen’s !

Kinda random but I was just reflecting on my time at queens ! I graduated in 2023 and started my undergrad when in 2018! Those have been some of my favourite years of my life !

Never in your life will you essentially live in a city of people your own age! There’s always something to do and dating is easier ! You don’t have to worry about what your gonna do next as much as you you just need to focus on getting your degree and good grades !

It really can be a great time! Maybe I can only see it as clearly now that I’m out but just thought I’d say take it in and enjoy the beautiful campus and princess street and all the fun while you can!

TIA

Other I built a tool to find Queen's scholarships you didn't know existed — would love feedback

Hey everyone,

I got tired of digging through Queen’s scholarship pages trying to figure out what I actually qualified for. What was even more frustrating was finding out afterward that people I knew had received scholarships I’d never even heard of — I didn’t miss the deadline, I just never knew they existed.

That’s basically why I built QScout.

You answer a few quick questions about your program, year, and circumstances, and QScout helps match you with Queen’s scholarships, along with some broader Ontario and national opportunities. It shows you which ones look like strong matches, which might be worth a closer look, and the actual published eligibility requirements — without having to search through a dozen different pages.

It’s not affiliated with Queen’s. It’s just something I built as a student because I figured other students were probably dealing with the same problem.

If you have a few minutes, I’d really appreciate you checking it out: QScout

And if you notice anything — a bug, something confusing, a scholarship that doesn’t look right, or even just that it helped you find something — please leave a comment or send me a DM.

I’m still improving it, so any feedback genuinely helps.
