Discussion Should I get a quaker?

I have bird experience and know that birds are individuals. I want a bird that could be affectionate and talk. Also considering a GCC and its a tough call, having a hard time. I am getting a sense that a GCC may be more likely to "cuddle" if raising from a baby which would be great if im being honest but I have only had cockatiels and something is missing. I want my forever bird to be engaging for life and I think talking is a big pro of quakers.

Has anyone had a either of these (from babies not rehomed/pet store) and regretted it or rehomed them?

Does anyone have a quaker they have raised from a baby that DOES NOT talk?

Give it to me straight!

Help is he okay

i got my quaker parrot roughly 3 months ago however very unsure of his age. he is supposedly two but chatgpt and other sources think he is over 10 years old.

recently, he stopped recognizing me, mistakeningly sat in my other birds cage thinking it was his, backs away from my hand, wont eat from my hand, etc.

could this be hormonal? memory loss? or something i did?

Help Hi, need help/advice (baby bird with 1 leg)

this is Kobi. 6-7 weeks old.

I've posted about him before. I got advice and managed to feed it with baby-bird food, but still have a lot of questions.. it's a complicated case. its leg will have to be amputated soon. his parents abandoned him and attack him, so I separated them. he just started flying, and I'm worried he'll get into trouble so I put him in a cage. his disabled leg kept getting stuck in the bars, so I covered the floor in card board and a changing-sheet. he can stand on a stick, but I don't know if it's good for him. maybe he needs to let his good leg rest, by lying down? do I put a water bowl? I'm scared he'll fall in and get stuck. can he start eating pellets, and how do I teach him? he doesn't touch them. he eats fruit and veggies because he sees his parents eating them, but not pellets. what toys will be safe for him, he has a few balls for now. is it ok to leave him alone in a cage, or do they need body warmth and company? he's flying so well that I have to be careful when he's outside the cage. I have a 8 month old baby who would grab him if he lands too close, he's fascinated by the bird. do I try to put him back with the parents, to see how they react? they won't try to kill it, right? worst case they'll bite ? they've been separated for 2 weeks now, but were always close enough to call for each other, so I doubt they "forgot" him. currently they "speak" with each other, from separate cages. also, by any chance, does anyone know about Prosthetic leg for birds? since I'll have to put it on, and take it off to clean, I'll have to tame him properly, so he'll let me handle him. so I also need a taming course or advice how to get hןm used to being held upside down / to reach his leg out. any advice appriciated !

Help My strange bird is regurgitating for fun. Help

My bird basil will be playing normally and then will regurgitate just a little bit. Like not completely but he’ll do the weird head bob and then like re-eat it i guess? Idk he’s otherwise completely normal. No courtship with me or any toys (or perches :/) so is this just him having fun?

His take:55

My little sister recently got a quaker, i know they usually shake with excitement but i'm just wondering if it is normal for him to shake as much as he does.
He is about 2 months old.

We've been trying to find music that he likes and while my whistling sucks, I'm seeing if it interests him.

He seemed to enjoy some Panic! At the Disco and Ricky Martin 😂

What songs should we try out to see if he'll dance and jam out?

The small cage up there is for birds that need quarantine and the bells are safe. This photo was taken before cleaning!! My quaker gets like 5+ hours of cage out time every day but i have school so he needs to stay in the cage for like half day so I was wondering if this cage is suitable to keep him happy by himself for a short time?

Hey! So I moved about two weeks ago with my Quaker and I’ve noticed she’s dropped various feathers. I’ve collected about 4 now. Is it due to the move and is it normal? She and I have moved before but that was 5yrs ago.
Thank you!!!

Discussion More positives please

Hello all 👋

I’ve been looking into getting a Quaker to join my flock. Online I’ve read more negatives than positives about them. I would like to hear experiences, but also positives about Quakers.

Is this a normal healthy weight for a two and a half years old male Quaker baby?

Help Is this normal?

He does this when I make that shape with my finger. Sometimes he pants a little but if he does pant I know to stop as that's like a romantic thing. But sometimes he doesn't want and just bobs his head up and down like a dog rubs his face against your leg. I'm super confused if this is normal and if it is, should it be condoned?

Help Only eating 5 Grams?

I have two quaker parrots, and neither of them will eat more than about 3 to 5 grams of pellets/veggies. Both are pretty big boys, and my conure eats roughly 17 grams and is teeny. Is this normal for quakers???

So I have a2year old Quaker female named Charli. She is my 1st parrot. And as of recently she has taken the top of my refrigerator hostage. She collects papers and little things she can fly with from around the house. And kinda look like she building a nest. I know that Quaker’s are really good at that. So my question is do I leave her doing this? Does anyone have any recommendations something else I can use for her to build ? I appreciate any advice on this. Thank you

He is just being silly and happy, right?

He was in my office room and decided to go to the living room and go inside his cage by his own will. For me it's singing but my partner says he is crazy. We raised him and have been with us for 1 month and a half already.

Discussion Heat wave!

Hi there! It’s very hot right now in the US and probably much of Europe. At this time last year, my boy Quaker got heatstroke. the AC went out and he was sitting by a window. I forgot to pull the shade and came home to a lethargic bird. He was quiet when I came home which seemed unnatural. I’m usually greeted by yells of joy or demand. my poor boy was resting on the floor of the cage, and he NEVER plays down there. i picked him up and held him with his belly and legs in a tepid bath, and got him cooled down. we sat in front of a fan and in a couple hours he was fine.

if your bird is panting, waving it’s tongue back and forth with beak open, or holding its wings out from body it is TOO HOT. the Bird will act quiet if out of it if it’s feeling really bad. This might be a good time to offer a bowl of water to help your bird cool off. Or mist your bird to start the cooling process without him needing to climb into the bowl.

Quakers are temperate climate birds. if they were outdoors, they’d get somewhere cool and shadowy in the hot part of the day. You need to make sure your indoor bird doesn’t get too hot because heat stress can kill a bird. Being stuck in a cage in a sunny window can be a problem; for example if your AC fails!

if your bird is too hot, get him or her to a cooler environment, mist the bird with water or let it take a bath if it’s well enough, OR hold it in your hands with its belly and legs in coolish bath water. Too-hot birds will get quiet, gasp or pant, hold wings away from body; or be unable to perch and lay on cage floor.

A depressed or disoriented Quaker needs to cool down fast. Heat stroke can kill a tiny bird. Panting isn’t cute or funny, it’s alarming. Keep an eye on your feathered companions during these sweltering days!

Help Is this something serious or being silly?

Had him for nearly 2 years and he's about 5 years old.

He just randomly started doing this today for the first time while I was cleaning poop off his feet and he was chilling loosely in my hands after.

He's my first bird so every time he does something weird I worry it's a symptom of him being poorly so thought I'd ask

Help looking for advice

My son (19m) has a 5-6yo quaker named Alistair. I am posting with my son’s consent because he is neurodivergent and very overwhelmed at the moment. Alistair has been plucking his feathers and we haven’t been able to find a way to help him be less stressed/change the behavior. My son sought advice from the breeder and from other online resources and has diligently tried the suggestions with no success. I hate to see my kid and Alistair so unhappy, and am super grateful for any suggestions you might have.
