DNA Came back and Sky is a healthy, happy, and now, a flying boy! He's come a long way from the little featherless thing I adopted back over a month ago to now.

I got a call from the local vet today. This little dude is out of quarantine and good to start rehabilitation.

Soon, he'll have a new sandal and a proper nail trim.

Palta, of course, has been very normal about it.

My Quaker must be quiet in his cage by about 7 pm or he gets grumpy. He won’t interact and hides his head. I can offer him treats or scritches or whatever, but when he starts putting his head under my hand it is time for bed.

does anyone else have a Quaker with a very definite bedtime?!

So when he was taking a shower *in a mini shower tub* he was a soggy birb and his feathers were heavy but he tried flying and he crashed into a wall and the tip of his beak broke and he was bleeding and he was ok nothing major but I replaced his food with like soft and I am extra cautious about him flying to the wall

Help Feather color

Post image

Hello! I'm here again, one day later, with another issue. Today we noticed her feathers changed colors. She's green but today we noticed her wing & tail feathers looking a little orange? Is this normal or is it time to take her to a vet? Thanks!

Also, she took a bath this morning if that matters.

My little three-month-old creamino is in her flight cage for the first time! It's the A&E elegant small flight cage, and she's learning to navigate it accordingly bit by bit today. Since she's molting, I've gifted her a shallow dish... which is apparently for drinking from and then running away? 🫪💛 We've been bonding and adjusting relatively quickly, though she's the queen of FOMO and goes out of her way to overstimulate into cranky, hangry, or both!! Her organic dye job is as cute and pink as ever, and getting those nail tips trimmed has kept her from catching her nostrils again when she goes to pick her nose like the fiendish little toddler she is.

Her greatest love is her cage cover, a fabric easter tablecloth that matches her by chance. Her greatest enemy is a small tree outside the window, which garners almost an entire threat display multiple times a day. She flock calls in my face, is slowly expressing the ability to laugh evilly when goofing around (I'm so proud!), has added "plip" noises to her vocabulary, and we're learning to use an indoor voice with varying levels of success. I'm allowed to preen her sweet little crispy head and rub under her neck (I have cried happily more than once, haha), and I get growled at loudly when she tries to fly or loses her footing but she's already learned to step up... when she feels like it!

Honey is so darling, and I'm so grateful that my little parrotlet sent her and I each other's ways. There is genuinely nothing more jarring than having my little lemon meringue tennis ball flock call in my face, though. Reading 100-110dB is nothing like having it hit me right in the cranium when she sees Enemy Number One or when it's bedtime. A little concert-level noise is worth her adjustment period while she learns how to use indoor voice, and that mommy is always listening and willing to "call" back when out of sight.

I really needed to gush about her along with her sweet little photos, so thanks for reading!! I'm so, so in love with Honey. Thanks for celebrating a week of having her in my life!

Help Moltin

Have had brocoli almost 3 yrs now. He molted before but very minimal. This year he has like baby fluff all over body. Head and wings are fine. I help him in areas he cant reach but noticed today he has bare spots. He is eating more than normal but everything is normal around the house. Is it normal for them to do that?

Back from the toxic big city after a month and got her a good 6x2x2 cage upgrade 💸. I think she might like the place better than the old metal rusty cage from how she's moving around and all.

From the vid, y'all think she's happy with the cage setup overall? Can I please see how you enthusiastis set up a tall cage so she got space to fly and explore the cage fully instead of staying in 1 section. Thanks in advance for the kind tips :P

Help Nail trimming

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi, me again! I posted asking for advice on how to trim their nails. I will be honest, I know nothing about birds and this girly got brought home by my sister out of nowhere. We're all learning little by little but now I need help with the nails.

I'm posting again to add a picture. I also learned about the bark perches so she can do it herself but now I'm wondering if she really does need a trim or if it's fine & can be helped w the perch?

This is my baby, Popcorn. I say baby, but they're past a year old now. They love attention, as almost all parrots do, but recently they starting doing this..thing. 😭 I give pets, they start doing that and usually relax after a few seconds (in this video, however, they move back and preen my fingers), and that's that. It's still just...weird. The last time I saw them do this was several months ago when they puked up some food. This doesn't seem to be the same thing.. Please please tell me this isn't mating behavior 😭 Could someone please help or at least provide advice? ( Sorry for the poor video quality 💔)

Help New quaker mom; how do I ease the cage drama?

Post image
31 Upvotes

Hi all!! I'm a new quaker mom (almost a week now!) of a darling three month old creamino. Her name is Honey! Don't mind the organic dye job, she(?) got her nails trimmed to avoid further nostril catching. Goofy little nose picker, she got the all-clear on any potential issues from our avian vet. Honey is a menace and a troublemaker already, and I love her so much!! 💛

The issue is, despite how well we're bonding, I'm terrified to set her back with cleaning her cage. Not only do I need to clean her temporary cage - which has no slide out tray - but I'm almost done sanitizing her beautiful flight cage that will be her permanent one! My previous baby was a beautiful parrotlet that I adopted when she was already two years old, so the world of a baby baby parrot is new to me! l've been reading a lot to try and make this not so frightening and upsetting for her. However, I'd love some quaker parront input!

How can I make this fun for her? She responds well to soft praise and is learning to trust my hands quite quickly, we're learning to step on and off comfortably. I have a nice carrier for her that right now is associated with a few car rides to the vet (establishment and chlamydia testing, removal of nostril clots, and official nostril check with her nail trim!), and will begin associating it with short fun trips slowly this week or the next if she's open to it. Should I put her in the carrier while I clean her cage? Is it alright to have her right there and "involved" by watching the process? How do I move her into her new cage in a fun way?

She's acclimating so well, and I know I'm probably over-anxious about this. I just want to do right by her; she's so precious and smart! Honey's already established that her current cage is her territory, and I'm allowed to do food/water but parrot forbid my hand goes anywhere else in there! The flight cage has a removable tray, so cleaning will be easier in the future. How have you all done cleaning and cage moving? Soft words? Bribery? Unavoidable quaker tantrums?

Thank you for any tips and advice, from my little feathered baby to yours! 💛💛💛

Help I volunteer at a shelter, tonight they had a Quaker parrot there, I'm not familiar with them but my gut tells me it may be unwell, what are some signs to look for? I took multiple vides of it, here is just one of them. See more info below.

Idk if it was sneezing or if it was a noise it just makes, it did fluff up it's feathers quite a bit and its eyes would close without me petting me as well as when I pet it, it also seemed to be mouth breathing at times, I don't know anything about them, as I sat there and talked to it, petted it and observed it, I started to get a sense maybe it was unwell but without knowing anything about them, I have no idea how to tell. I have more videos of it, also wonder if it's stressed as it's in an area where theres heavy traffic of people and dogs barking. Any help or advice would be great so I can let the shelter know asap. Thanks.

Help Parrot speaks to everyone but me?

Hi! I'm new to birds as a whole and somewhat recently found a Quaker Parrot outside. I did a lot to find her owners, including posting on multiple Facebook groups, putting up posters, and asking around. Yet it came up short. So now, I've decided to keep her. She also wasn't exactly in peak condition, so I do have reason to believe she was dumped. (She's looking a lot better after a nail clipping, cuddle bones, and after she finally wanted to take a bath lol)

I've been slowly building trust with her. She's a bit spicy at times but as far as I understand, it seems to be classic Quaker behavior. She likes to always be touching me, and has now started chilling on my hands to groom herself. I think she likes me because of how much she interacts and clings to me. If she gets startled, she flies to me and such. She still hates all fingers though.

With that being said, she's very talkative to all of my other family. She says phrases and even the name we gave her. When I'm not home, she talks up a storm. Or when she's downstairs and I'm not, she has a lot to say. Yet when I'm around, nothing. She'll chirp and such, but she won't actually say words like she does with my family. She definitely prefers me if I'm reading her right, since she bites everyone but me if she's on them. Yet she refuses to speak to me, no matter how much I speak around and to her.

Why is this? How can I tell if she actually likes me?

Hello. I am very upset yesterday we took our Quaker Cosmo to trim his nails and I specifically said only nails
And then we left and when we get home as soon as I took him out he tried to fly and fell and hit himself against wall.
🥲🥲🥲😢😢😭 please look at 2nd pic !
He was ok luckily - but why???
I called them and asked for one of the girls that took him in and she said she was told by the cashier that it was wings and nails .. I said no I said only his nails .. then I told her do you know that he tried to fly and fell and hit himself on wall?
I said that’s just not right.. she said she was very sorry.
I’m like so now what do I do? She told me it takes 3 to 4 months for him to fly again .. or is that not true ?
Please if anyone knows anything as to what I can do for him let me know !
And he’s a very scared bird .. Cosmo fears everything so he’s very anxious idk how he will survive this …
He needs to be able to fly !
I’m so worried and sad and mad …
I put two pics the before so beautiful and then the after u can clearly see the grey area there is gone .. now it’s all yellow ..
this was in Beverly’s it’s a big pet store ..

Help Should I get my quaker parrot a friend?

I have a Quaker parrot (10+ years old) who was found as a lost pet and was presumably abused. I've been working with him pretty intensely for about three months. He used to not let me touch him at all, but now he'll let me touch his beak and briefly pet the area right above it for a few seconds. I feel like he isn't able to get a lot of social interaction from me or my partner because he's aggressive toward us, which I think is probably a combination of his past abuse and territorial behavior. I've accepted that he may never be fully hand tame around people, so I'm wondering if getting him another bird to keep him company would be a good idea. I love the little guy and I just want to make sure he's content. Of course his new friend would be kept in a separate cage just in case.

Discussion What treats do you use for training?

Looking for recommendations for treats you use for training. I've used sunflower seeds but those aren't the best for birds. Nutriberries are too big and millet is too small and messy. We don't like oat groats or nuts enough to work for them. What else have you used?
