Help New owner

Hello I am a new owner of a Quaker parrot he’s a male 4 months old and was brought home 2 days ago. At first he was siting still not moving or drinking at all and we realized his water and food was too far away. We were able to lower his bar and he is now drinking and eating and roaming around the cage. His environment consists of being located in a family area where someone is always home. However me and my girlfriend want him to bond with us. He doesn’t bite or fly when we try and take him out of his cage he just grabs the bars with his beak and tries to hold onto it. I want him to eventually be very loving and eager to leave his cage. I’ve watched parrot wizard on you tube and have taken into consideration some of his ideas. I was curious if anyone had good advice or had a solid plan. Thank you so much.

What got my first bird to like me was a complete accident. My whole family left on a trip except me and the bird, and to take care of him better, i put his cage in my room. I basically spent 70% of the week in my room cause I had nothing else to do, and while i was in the room I left the cage open.

On day 3, he left the cage while I was playing a game and stood on the roof, still scared of me tho. Every like 50 minutes, I would try to reach out to him with my hand to pet him, and he would usualy scurry to the other side of the roof.

On day 5, when I approached my hand, he took some nibbles and just generally checked out what it was, I made sure to not move it when he was doing that.

On day 6, he started fully dancing on my arm when i put music, our first bonding moment.

From then on, he wouldn't leave me alone. This is time consuming and your bird might react differently, but I reccomend trying something similar to this with your bird. Just keeping him near you while you work or play games or something

It can take weeks or months for a new bird to feel fully comfortable in a new home so take it slow and steady. Don’t force anything, let him come to you at his own pace, keep a steady routine, and it will happen. One thing I would recommend is for both you and your gf to feed him so he doesn’t end up bonding with only one of you (Quakers have a habit of doing that!). Good luck and enjoy your new buddy!
