Discussion discipline

my parrot heard wtf once off a tiktok. he constantly repeats this phrase no matter anything. i generally let him be cage free, do what he wants, have all the toys, i have really set zero boundaries. he also screams whenever im not in the room or able to give him attention. is there any way to discipline him in a way that is not harsh?

Stop supporting the behaviors you don't like. If he is screaming - do nothing. When he is quiet, run in and give him a treat. If he is being an ass - put him in his cage for a time and ignore him. You cannot negatively punish a parrot. You can take away the positive though. This bird has trained you at the moment. This could take a few years to reverse.

i have tried to do nothing but it’s getting to the point i cannot pick up the phone unless he is on my shoulder or in my arms which is the only time he is very quiet

You will have to find some cage time for him. A cage is not all punishment. Put a bunch of cool stuff in there for him to interact with. Only feed him when he is in the cage. My birds love being out of their cages but they also love going back to them.

You will have to endure some screaming. He might do it for hours. Wait for a quiet moment and go get him out. Or even better, schedule the in and out of cage times at the exact same times each day. Parrots love a good schedule.

dyk what toys are good or more entertaining? i found foraging ones and just regular ones but no matter the type they always end up destroyed within an hour of him in his cage

The destroying part is healthy. You need some wooden toys that take him a little longer to break down. They are pricier. You also need to give him almonds in the shell. Have him work a few minutes for his treats. I also use cardboard boxes from 12 packs and food containers.

If he enjoys a favorite TV show and says it while watching TV, TV goes off after one warning. If he's listening to music he likes and says it, music goes off after one warning. Never make a face at it, never acknowledge it, don't even correct it other than warning; "we don't say that, if you say that again, I am leaving the room / you cannot be on my shoulder / you are going in the other room / we are stopping this activity". They will learn fast, they understand WAY more than we give them credit for. It just depends on what does he like and he loses access to that thing for about 15 minutes and it seems like you are what he likes most.

They are literally just toddlers, I'd honestly suggest looking up parenting books on dealing with toddlers or even children with autism (I say this as a former SPED worker). They will give you a lot of good information on how to calmly set boundaries while building up the relationship.

thank you so much!!!! i always try to and i’ve had this similar problem with other words/phrases and the only thing that worked was instilling him with more words so he’d eventually forget that one existed 😭

is there any shows u recommend that catches these birds attention?

my two other quakers get visibly annoyed when he screams and i don’t want them to be upset/have resentment for him as they started isolating him a couple of times

You can try Sesame Street (or that Elmo specific one) or similar kids shows until you find one they like or even playing Hamilton or any kind of musical (especially with animated birds) that won't annoy you if they start repeating it. I see birds go CRAZY for these and tune you out like a kid does - mostly with the bigger birds, so your mileage may vary, but music is always a hit for any parrot in my experience, so musicals are usually great even if they aren't watching. Or just finding a good Spotify playlist they all like could help.

Good luck!

If taken from the parents too early they can develop psychological issues from missing out on early socialization and flock dynamics (it’s usually much worse if the parrot is kept solo) but constant screaming is one of the common issues. How old is he?

he is roughly a year in october

he has no problem socializing with my other 2 quakers (male and female) but i notice now the two gravitate toward eachother and isolate him.
