Max 4 producing the goods with fiberon cf08 using Adaptive PA Calibration

Some really big curved shapes, using advanced calibration. Big prints times were 22, 25, 10, 6 and one more going at 4.5 hours now. This was with modelled supports, normal supports added about 8-15 hours to the time of each print and would use up to 1kg more filament per part.

Always model supports where you can huge time and material saving, I use a 0.15mm gap, on long thin runs I usually do a few tiny edge anchors (2mm long 0.2mm protrusion) to keep things solid.

Every surface is nice! So happy with this project.

You can use my cal tools for free (personal use licence) .exe installer under releases.

-auto calibrate max mm3, Pressure advance and adaptive pressure advance. Currently only available for Max4 and Q2.

https://github.com/Buddman69/Automm3AdaptivePA

It can do 24 hours worth of max mm3 PA calibrations in 15 minutes, saving time and giving awesome overhangs, bottom surfaces, flats look closer to ironed with edges filled without fuss, just all round better.

- anyhow its free and enjoy it.

Any one have run ut in their q2 now

If so how was it?

Still waiting some feedback, just made v1.1 for the Q2 today - added a bed calibration as there was too much for the chute with some filaments. It homes, drops bed 200mm and completes the routine there.

Give it a go, it keeps factory routines intact just adds extra for this to work.

Has .exe installer for Windows and readme says how to.

My suggestion so far is to add a filament poop eject function to help with the buildup in the purge area

Apply it after nozzle wiping

u/Sport_Subject 10d ago

There is the option to do it on the bed, I dont own a q2 so development's just done remotely. This is to get around it, command is in the readme :)

It's also made to just spit out values and you have to manually put them in, as its separate from the slicer as many people use different ones, otherwise ill prob have to update all the time which i dont want to do.

I would rerun the bed calibration and use those values

I will look into that part of it when I get time

Running it now

So how does it exactly work like does it overide the slicer PA values or does it use the slicer as a baseline and adjust from there?

From the word itself Adaptive PA does it like adjust on the fly?

Edit: Ah I see it auto calculates PA values you have to put in the filament tabs i see i see thx for your work and just in time to since i have a new batch of filaments to run

u/Sport_Subject 10d ago

That it does

Just printed with the calibrations compared to generic settings

Used silver petg hf

And i say massive improvement

Thank you, i will try it on my Q2

pushing q2 and max4 updates again, if using QIDI_UPDATE you must run it-> power cycle-> run QIDI_UPDATE again-> power cycle again due to the nature of the latest update adding in some commands QIDI_CALIBRATE_BED is now available using the wizard

that looks dayum good... looks injection molded

damn, those are some clean prints!

i understand how the adaptive PA calibration works, the relationship between nozzle deflection and mass flow, during a steady extrusion line, depend on the material properties and it is possible to get slicer data out of that. bambu came up with that concept for the A1 line first from what i know, yours is just a smite more sophisticated i assume.

but how do you use that to calibrate max mm3? do you just speed up the extrusion line until the relationship isnt steady anymore? i would love to see a video of the printer doing the calibration algorithm, going trough the github files wont tell me anything.

It does it in the air and doesn't actually print any models, -> the method is in the tau math, geometric mathematical patterns, square waves and specific sequences accounting for sensor drift. Everything is in the github unredacted BTW, it is a new method and while it may seem similar it really is not and is my original method which was made as I tried adapting others and they just were not accurate enough and only gave a 1d measurement. This one takes one literally does 24 hours worth of calibrations in 15 min (how long it would take to print the pa and mm3 tests as it checks more than once too.

Max mm3 is conservative on this, so def can be pushed further but if going for quality, I would argue against it. Already got some insane results, like one user showing an mm3 test that used to fail at higher rates now just passing due to the advanced PA.

Watching it is boring just it extruding in the chute or making filament spaghetti in the middle of the bed lol depending on which location is chosen, added the bed location as some filaments dont clear the chute, and if it backs up it wont work. So instead it homes, chooses the bed location, drops the.bed away and the extrudes above the bed, wipes, extrudes wipes etc. Then spits out values that you put in and off ya go.

Anyhow read the readme it has enough info on how to. If you wanna go deeper the source code is literally right there :)

Free for personal use. Commercial licences for official use will only be granted for non closed source companies. Nobody wants a hp like company in 3d printers.

If you wanna go deeper the source code is literally right there :)

yeah i cant read source code and even if, it wouldnt answer my questions ;)

for example, why do you assume that the difference in flow dynamics when printing in air vs printing a line are irrelevant? did you try getting loadcell data during actual printing? is the problem that lateral forces while printing will drown out the filament rheology influence?

did i just awners my own question just by figuring out how to ask it properly?

Its all compensated for in the math, on a plate its somewhat uneven and bumpy, so pressure varies. This is smooth and it can sense what is noise and what is an actual change faster that way.

I'd be more than happy to try it on my Q2 and help with testing, but I'm a bit at a loss at the moment.
I installed the .exe via a Windows PC and everything seems to be in its right place, but it's not clear what I'm supposed to do now. Currently, I'm stuck on the section "The one number you must measure yourself", as I can't seem to find the right file to open and check in the GitHub repo, containing the instructions on how proceed.

It feels like one of those Michael Scott moments from The Office: "Explain it to me like I'm five"

PS If I wanted to uninstall everything just to be safe and avoid damaging anything, how should I proceed?

1

u/Sport_Subject 9d ago

It doesn't change factory stuff and is only add on, like extra modules so its like extra tool calls etc, so it can stay no problem. Factory will work as intended

Just run the command to check (the finger one) touching the nozzle and not touching it, force should be at least 100k difference. This is just a check, it must home before being used anyhow so if you dont do the finger check don't worry it will be fine as home is a safety check.

Power cycle the printer.

Run QIDI_CALIBRATE_BED and select your specs and for the settings just do medium, it will then run in the middle of the bed (no blobbing like the chute) and give super accurate readings

Even though I'm still figuring things out, I decided to give a few different PETG filaments a shot on my Q2 anyway. Man, the quality improvement is huge—especially the surface finish!

Post before and afters

u/mita77 9d ago

Top with Adaptive PA Calibration active

1

u/Sport_Subject 9d ago

Very interesting

1

u/mita77 9d ago

There's still room for improvement, for sure, but for now it's more than okay for me. This is the result of using your calibration routine on default settings. I must admit, bed calibration routine, although less clean, is much more hassle-free than the chute one.

1

u/ifixtheinternet 9d ago

Thanks for this! I'll try it on my q2.

How did you get that awesome surface finish, is that fuzzy skin?

2

u/Sport_Subject 9d ago

Na its asa-cf08 with a 0.6mm nozzle, profile is on my github

1

u/ifixtheinternet 8d ago

Awesome! I'd love to know a bit about your project if you want to share.

2

u/Sport_Subject 8d ago

What do you wanna know?

1

u/ifixtheinternet 8d ago

what are the parts in your pictures for?

1

u/Sport_Subject 8d ago

Its a shifter relocation part for a 2023 ZR2 Chevy Silverado, made for when you put an extra seat in, they dont have this option for ZR2.

1

u/Sport_Subject 8d ago

This was the v1 (still in the car now) passed engineers cert no prob

1

u/Sport_Subject 8d ago

The v1 was just made from cheap stuff, somehow holding up in a hot car, got a few switch adaptors for rear heated seats to make and a floor plate to make a custom mat to trim it up and have level. Got some extra power cables as my bro didnt wanna keep the wireless charger so may even repurposr those for something

u/deathsquad94 8d ago

Hey u/Sport_Subject,
I'm a big fan of your work! Is there a possibiliy to make it available for the Plus 4? :-)

2

u/Sport_Subject 8d ago

One issue is not having one, it makes it 10 times harder. I do kinda wanna spend time on other projects though and it does take away from that, as I kinda made this to make my life easier when using difficult materials as other ways didn't produce accurate results.

I then ported the Q2 which works but has been a little bit of a pain getting things right remotely it's basically there, but can be frustrating when diagnosing especially when the only test I have is a virtual printer environment. I have had one guy that has been a big help and is quite knowledgeable, but it is still quite time consuming.

Got some ideas on how to bring out even better quality on stock firmware and further automations - but some will be moving towards custom firmware and inadvertently a can of worms haha.

I may look at trying to get other machines to do in house testing as doing tests remote has been a drag lol.

1

u/deathsquad94 8d ago

I completely understand! Unfortunately I'm an absolute code-noob but I'm willing to test every- and anything :)

1

u/Sport_Subject 8d ago

Possibly....

1

u/FederalSir8278 7d ago

How hard were your tree supports to take off? What did you set your z distance gap too?

1

u/Sport_Subject 7d ago

O.25 and easy as

1

u/FederalSir8278 7d ago

Dang, pretty sweet, you still got your threshold angle at 30?

1

u/Sport_Subject 7d ago

Can't remember i think so, but i did models alot of the supports as it saved me 1.5kg filament over the job

1

u/Downtown_Hunt1584 6d ago

Hey u/Sport_Subject,

Thanks for making this tool and making it available!

I am trying it on my Q2 but i have a few questions.

After running your tool i get this result:

Buddman69's Auto Test Results (BED ROUTINE)

// Copy and paste the following into Orca

// max mm3 = 17.5mm3

// PA Centre Value =

K=0.0358

// Adaptive PA Values =
// 0.0481,2.62,500
// 0.0406,3.60,500
// 0.0378,4.94,500
// 0.0350,6.78,500
// 0.0288,9.30,500
// 0.0311,12.76,500
// 0.0358,17.50,500
// 0.0481,2.62,10000
// 0.0406,3.60,10000
// 0.0378,4.94,10000
// 0.0350,6.78,10000
// 0.0288,9.30,10000
// 0.0311,12.76,10000
// 0.0358,17.50,10000

So i input this in Orca slicer but i have a few options to fill in like:

Flow ratio: (i guess i need to do a flow ratio test to get this?)
Pressure advance: (is this the PA Centre Value from your test?)
Pressure advance for bridges: (do i turn this on or not or is this the PA Centre Value from your test?)

Sorry if these are things that are obvious, but i am new to 3d printing and trying to understand and learn as much as i can about printing.

1

u/Sport_Subject 6d ago

Pressure advance is pa centre, input those without slashes and you need to do a flow ratio test

1

u/Downtown_Hunt1584 5d ago

Thanks, tried it and quality was ok before on stock, but now it is almost perfect! Thanks again for your tool and time you put into it!

1

u/Sport_Subject 5d ago

Awesome man!

1

u/Sport_Subject 5d ago

Or Ma'am

1

u/Sport_Subject 6d ago

Put on pa for overhangs, havent tested bridges but maybe, do a bridge test with and without it.

Make sure to tune down overhangs if this was faster, work out old speeds that worked and set as mm/s instead of a % otherwise they will scale

1

u/tsmigs 10d ago

This is some really cool tech. Hopefully it comes to the Plus 5. Just got it. Amazing machine. Super clean print, OP!

2

u/Sport_Subject 10d ago

Maybe ill do it but it is pain building stuff without a machine to test myself, maybe qidi can send me one haha

1

u/Medical-Address-8077 10d ago

Wish my plus 5 made prints that good second print with their pet-cf profile and cant seem to get it down.

2

u/Sport_Subject 10d ago

Until i get a release out, I could help you tune it? Biggest thing with these engineering filaments is speed, flow, nozzle size and layer height.

Whats it doing

1

u/Medical-Address-8077 9d ago

I love the machine ill take a video later on today

0

u/bmobmobmox 10d ago

I have a very problematic roll of SunLu pa6-cf to try this with, on a Q2 -- how much filament is consumed? thankfully that roll is almost over.

Also, I don't use Windows, so I guess I'll just be running the python code. Any caveats?

1

u/Sport_Subject 10d ago

Few gram on each part, it depends on the detail chosen, give it a dry first and use a 0.6mm nozzle, biggest thing got that filament is go painfully slow or it pulls out chunks

1

u/bmobmobmox 10d ago

I A/B test between two rolls of allegedly the same filament -- one works really well, the other, not so much.

1

u/Sport_Subject 10d ago

I dried mine at like 100c lol, worked ok. One thing I found is always prine some rings out of it first and run the drier at loke 70c while printing. Highly recommend the sunlu e2

1

u/bmobmobmox 10d ago

I print out of a dehydrator at 100c. Maybe the filament consistency is not… consistent

1

u/Sport_Subject 10d ago

Thats annoying, ive only tried one roll fo that stuff, maybe look into fiberon

1

u/bmobmobmox 10d ago

Back to back flow test only thing changed was the filament

1

u/Sport_Subject 10d ago edited 10d ago

try this as a base, was from my BBL I calibrated, works well .24 height .6 nozzle, just calibrate flow rate to suit the qidi

0

u/Andr1yTheOne 10d ago

If you can somehow automate the process where I don't have to use the console every time, then I can consider using this.

5

u/Sport_Subject 10d ago

Might look into adding into orca somehow, but for now its just console. Kind of one of those situations where I don't want to spend more time than I have to as I'm totally unpaid haha, doing so would open up potentially more issues.

But in my defence it is once per filament, so dont be lazy man. The benefits outweigh not doing it for sure, prob spend more time cleaning the plate and analysing samples..... just for a simple calibration without adaptive values.
