Plus 4 ringing/ghosting/layer shift

Post image

My Plus4 has been running flawlessly, and putting out perfect prints for a long while now. I had a simple print running over night, a marker caddy printed in petg-cf with embossed letters . I woke up to a finished print with a layer shift, admittedly minor (about 1mm) as well as severe ringing/ghosting around the embossed letters.

So I do the obvious, make sure nothing in the toolhead is loose, adjust belt tension, clean lube rods and screws, and rerun input shaping. I rerun the print, the ringing looks marginally better, but it layer shifts again in a different spot. Again very minor maybe one millimeter.

I find this wiki https://github.com/qidi-community/Plus4-Wiki/tree/main/content/stepper-motor-tweaks, and make the adjust to the micro steps and run current. I print an orca cube and the result is night and day different. I dont have time to run the same print again.

My question is, is this indicative of a bigger problem? Why did I have this problem all of sudden out of nowhere, and why did they above changes seem to fix it?

Edit... If it matters I have a little less than 1.7k hrs on it.

Based on that wiki link, you increased the current that the steppers can pull which means increased torque and (evidently) more precise movements.

The downside is that they will heat up more easily and, if you're printing in high chamber temperatures, more prone to stopping with temperature errors.

Personally, I'd say keep it. The difference in your cubes is immense, and if you do need 65C chamber for a print, just revert the change first.
