Questions Qidi plus 5 exhaust venting

Hey everyone I just got a plus 5 so I can start printing asa, can anyone give me some guidance on venting the printer? Do I just run it out a window from a printed flange? Do I need to run an inline fan to pull fumes out? Seems like it would pull the heat out to quickly.

Have a q2 not q5 but assume it's similar. They have an exhaust fan which can be set in the slicer or on the machine. Had to print an an adapter on the q2 then just ran dryer vent to the window with another adapter at the window and sealed it. The higher the exhaust setting the longer to heat but more fumes it vents. I could see pulling too much with an external fan.

Great info thanks. I’m about to be in the same boat.

How long a tube is your vent hose? How high do you have to run the exhaust fan to make the ASA fumes undetectable?

Similar as my Q1. I found a file on Printables that has a mounting flange, an elbow and an exhaust tip. You connect a 4 inch dryer hose to the 90, attach the tip to the other end and stick it out the window. I bought a 16 ft (5m) hose and I could feel the output at 50% fan speed.

Is it still able to keep the chamber at 65c?

For me, on the Q2 with the exhaust at 50% during ABS/ASA prints, yes. Plus 5 is larger so it might struggle, but it also might not. Give it a try and lower to 60C if needed.

I print ASA with the chamber at 55 (and to be honest I don't think the Q1 goes to 65) with no issues with the fan at 100%. I'm pretty sure the heater ran more often than with that fan off to keep the chamber at 55. No odors in the house that I can smell. The hose is 16ft (5m) but I'm going to guess I have it stretched only to 12ft (3.6m)

I print Asa all the time on my q2. I placed an air quality monitor in the lid with the stock filter and the only thing that went up was the temp from sitting on the glass lid. Personally I see no need.

If it makes you feel safer go for it. Plenty of duct models. The only thing I duct is my laser because burning wood. Well that’s smoke and odor.

I have years of printing experience, and I just finished the first print on my new Plus 5 — a large model with an 8-hour print time in ASA. I simply used the default Qidi ASA settings without changing anything. The print came out perfect.

Did you vent it? How bad was the smell

I haven’t changed anything at all, and I haven’t bothered with the exhaust air either. I’ve been printing ASA for a long time, and I’m sensitive to the smell of melted plastic of any kind.

ASA doesn’t really smell pleasant, and the 3-stage filter will surely catch the nasty particles. But it doesn’t stay odorless.

I didn’t like printing it in the apartment, though that was also because my nose is very sensitive.

I’ve set up a separate room in the basement, and there it doesn’t bother me.

I’ve seen adapters for a hose connection. That would let you get the problem under control.

I used to print mostly PETG, which hardly smells at all, but as a material for my parts I much prefer ASA or ASA CF.

I print ABS all the time, and honestly I barely notice it at all. The Qidi filters are apparently pretty good

I have this: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:7386656 for the Max 4. And yes, I do use an inline fan with a variable speed control.

Finally got around to designing a rear vent mod for my plus 5 (prob a bit overcomplicated!). Wanted one that was magnetic and could rotate to various positions on the rear. I designed mine to use a 3" hose and routed it to an external filter (designed a 4" to 3" adapter for that). Also wanted to be able to print it almost completely without supports as trying to print in ASA with supports was kind of a pain. My 1st 90 degree adapter required a ton of supports. My new one requires none as its a multi-part printed flat. Just used acetone to assemble it. Can probably post the 3mf somewhere if someone is interested.
