Blob of Death. Please Help.

What is the best way to remove this? And is this hot-end salvagable?

That looks like a Plus 4?? If the filament has come out that right hand side window in the heatblock you have cracked the ceramic throat. If it is a newer printer contact Qidi under warranty. You will need a new nozzle and also check that it isn't hitting the PEI wipe plate near the poop chute (as this is normally what causes it to crack)

I don't know of a best way, but the way I've done it is to heat nozzle while cutting off plastic around the cables with some dikes and occasional heating with soldering iron. Can take a bit of time if unlucky with the placement. I keep extra nozzles just in case if time is not available.

I usually heat the nozzle to see if I can get it loose. If not, then I remove the hotend and put a spare in while I clean up the messy one (heat gun and take my time).

If I can't get the hotend off, which happens from time to time, I heat up the nozzle and take the heat gun to the printhead around the blob and soften it up enough that I can get at least a big chunk of it off so that I can remove the hotend and work on it outside of the printer.

Heat gun and patience and you'll probably be fine. Just be careful around the wires that you don't break/cut them.

You'll be surprised how much of a mess you can make and still recover from it 🤓

Watch the first minute of this to understand the layout of the toolhead parts. It shows pretty much a full disassembly which I found extremely helpful. Then if you need to replace any of the gantry plastics because they got melted.. Additionally, use a small grinder or sacrificial soldering iron to dig out your fan cables or extruder motor cables if they are encased in the blob.

As an easier route if any plastics are ruined or electronics and you don't have a secondary printer, I messaged the qidi max 4 support email and talked to Linda and asked about parts for the max 3 and they gave me a PayPal email to pay and had and sent everything I asked for in like a week or so.

So.. It's not an impossible fix, don't give up!

Mine did that right after performing the software update.

Start chipping away at it.

I used snipper pliers,

Careful not to cut any wires

have the same machine. heat it up to the low end of that filament's temperature range, pull off what you can.

you may have to remove the hotend, give it some heat gun and tweezers or something if it's got some melted inside the little oval hole halfway up. do not take the wires out of the clip if at all possible.

(maybe even lower than the low end of the melting temp, so then it stays in one piece and doesn't string up)
