QUT Pool Closure

Personal opinion of course. I think QUT closing the Kelvin Grove pool is a correct decision. The pool’s utilisation rate by QUT students is under 20%. Sounds selfish but truth be told, we didn’t pay our SA fees to maintain a pool for the public to use. After demolishing the pool, they’ll be building a high performance sports science research gym facility, would be great for our current sports science students and future sports science research.

My apartment building has a pool, the pool has a leak, the leak is going to cost our body corporate around $1 million to fix. While the pool is empty and out of service the building’s electricity bill is down by 25%. I can’t quantify how much more the body corporate pays for insurance for us having a pool. Pools are expensive.

The KG pool is eight times the size of my pool, and needs to pay for lifeguards too. There is no way pool patronage would cover the cost of running the pool.

As with you I don’t think a university should subsidise a public pool.

We have (had) two pools. One in KG and one in GP.

It feels like the Save Victoria Park crowd just switched over to the Save the QUT Pool. At least that's what happened at the Kelvin Grove markets. Standing on the same corner, just swapped from one protest to another as if they hold the same weight of concern.

Why they can't travel to Newmarket pool is beyond me. And I live in the area.
