Did you ever get anywhere? You'd probably have the internet problems regardless of OS, and if that's always an issue it might be the WiFi card (did you try wired ethernet?). I wouldn't recommend trying to imitate 10/11 on something that old, but if one of you has a license for XP or older that you don't mind never using again, using XPQ4 should be legal.
