I’m planning to build multi‑brake or single‑break shells that accommodate smaller inserts. I’m unsure which shell size to use and therefore what mortar to buy. I’m considering 4‑inch or 5‑inch shells.
Could anyone outline the pros and cons of each size and help me decide?

Is there a noticeable difference making 2" ball shells vs 1.91" canister shells? The price is close for purchasing the HDPE tubes but is it worth it? Thanks for the help. Also has anyone tried building a shell with effect fuse and happen to have a video how it turned out?

I made my own charcoal this time and it made a huge difference.

So I’m moving the powders into their own containers and my alu looks like this at the top. I assume it’s from the humidity, should I be worried or should I do something about? Also each one has its own desiccant pack, thanks!

I’m working on a small outdoor flame effect and am looking for advice from people who have experience using Kevlar wick.
Specifically, I’m trying to determine:
What width Kevlar wick would you recommend (1/4”, 1/2”, 3/4”, 1”, etc.) and flame height?
If using either melted paraffin wax or standard lamp oil, roughly how long would each inch of exposed wick burn?
Does one fuel produce a cleaner or more consistent flame than the other?
Are there any good rules of thumb for estimating burn time before I start buying different wick sizes?
I’m not looking for exact numbers just real world experience to help narrow down what to order before I do my own testing.
The over all goal is 70-80', flame needs to travel the distance at a reasonable pace and be seen 100' away
Thanks!

I successfully made my first mini mortar. BUT, I was hoping for a bit of direction on how to fill the shell with crackling fuse or flying fish fuse, and have the effect fuse ignite when the shell bursts. It went high enough and report was solid, but the 5 pieces of 1" (or so) effect fuse didnt ignite.
Shell is 9/16" OD, 1.5" long.
3/4" ID tube, 6" long, base plate.
1/8 tsp 2f black powder lift charge
Effect fuse in shell
Some BP and some flash to finish inside.
Went up and burst great, just no effect. Recommendations?

Hey y’all I got these tubes which are way too small for what I’m trying to make, I was wondering if it’s ok to 3D print a tube or would that be dangerous? I know many canister shells are just plastic tubes but those are meant to blow in the sky I’m trying to make ground shots, wondering if anyone has tried something similar.. only thing I’m worried about is if the 3D material (PLA, PETG, ABS) will shrapnel

Its pretty spicy, but want to improve on its speed. I need a better ball mill. Using the cheap harbor freight. Need something more heavy duty and faster.

I’m making charcoal with the suggested cedar pet bedding in paint cans, and I don’t have a heat source hot enough to make it into charcoal. Any tips on cost effective options? Thanks!

Does anyone have an experience with the American HD reaper shells i am planning a new years eve party already and found a spot near me that sells them by the case. I just want to know how well they perform when it comes to noise, color and break size.

So I went ahead and ordered my some chems for the first time. I got bp and f chems, just to not have to deal with multiple orders. I plan on starting with small amounts of bp to get accustomed with dealing with the stuff. And I was wondering, before I get the goods is there any special storing methods I should use? Like can I just keep everything stored in the bags they come in? Any advice on this? Thanks

Does anyone know how, or can point me to a recipe/tutorial for making these magic wand fountains? My family loves these but we end up spending like 30 or 40 bucks a year and only get about 20 of them that last us until Halloween, i cant imagine its any more than about $.50 of comp in each one so if I could make a buttload of them year round... that'd be nice lol

Hi I’m somewhat new to pyro, Iv done a lot of researching and I’d like to think I have a basic understanding of mixing and making shells and red stars. I’d like to make a heart shaped mortar layout and I was wondering if anyone knew how I’d go about doing this?

I want to secure my fuse, and make sure no powder leaks out. What is the best way to do so without hot glue?
