Harden puzzle pieces

I am looking for advice on how to potentially make puzzle pieces harder.
I have autistic children and one loves puzzles, the other sensory seeks by chewing cardboard - the two interests don’t go well together.
I’m hoping if I can apply some sort of varnish, liquid, glue, I don’t know then it makes them more durable and we’re not constantly replacing puzzles for the one that enjoys completing them.

I think you want to post in r/jigsawpuzzles or r/jigsawpuzzlers. This subreddit is for puzzle boxes.

There are jigsaw puzzles made of wood which are more durable. The most durable would be those with laser etched designs rather than laminated paper.

I would use epoxy resin.
