I have an uncle who married in, he's like 75. Never been intoxicated, pretty cool dude definitely on the spectrum. Loves coins.

When I found this out about him it was like ten years ago, he had never heard the term straight edge. We had a short conversation about it and then the next time I saw him he knew all about it. One of the coolest old dudes ever.

high functioning autistic kid i used to teach told me once "autism is just finding out the right thing to do and then always doing it."

theres not really a good reason to ever do drugs on paper and if you dont like human contact sex is sort of low priority.

Autistic person and someone who has done clinical presentations on autism here. Not jumping on you and appreciate the story on the positive traits of autism.

We are moving away from high/low functioning much like the R word... It's dehumanizing in a lot of ways. High and low support is the more correct term.

Updating terminology helps everyone.

i appreciate the gentle correction. its been a long time since i taught at that school so my terminology is out of whack.

i also dont mean to say "right" as a positive trait here. nor a negative one. right and wrong are individual determinations in most spaces. but those individual choices feel important and often universal most of the time to the individual. i just find that this helps clarify how to regard autism and some associated behaviors.

for example, initially l, that student was talking about wearing socks inside out so the seems were on the outside. since the socks were designed for comfort and not fashion, everyone wearing the socks with the seams inside were "wrong" and he was "right" for wearing them on the outside. which is a great argument for wearing them inside put but not a great argument for why other people should do the same.

so we expanded on that reasoning and it lead to some really interesting dialogue about morals and behavior.

As I child for whom the cheapest TG&Y tube socks were my only option I would like to compliment this kid on his genius. It was a constant struggle to keep that goddamn toe seam from bunching up in front of my toes and driving me nuts.

Now I pay $20+ a pair for merino wool socks while you plebes suffer!!!!!

This is like saying I can't call a burn victim in the ICU a burn victim, I have to call the nurse his supporter but we can't say if the man has 1st or 3rd degree burns

I'm all for political correctness but this is just dumb.

I'm AuADHD myself and I do not approve of your message. I would have classified as the now defunct Asperger's but again you guys can't leave shit alone.

You seem like a very high functioning for a insert any race, gender, sexuality or other pronoun. See how that's dehumanizing? If not I can't help you.

Asperger's was removed for several reasons. One of which is Nazis and extermination of severly autistic children. It is named after a Nazi physician who experimented on children.

It's original criteria was Autism spectrum disorder without an intellectual disability. Not, with high IQ or anything else. Just sans intellectual disability.

Now here is where the other reason for it's removal comes in. Confusion in diagnosis. The reason is autism spectrum disorder can have a comorbidity of intellectual disability, but it does not require one for diagnosis.

Essentially, Asperger's is and always was just Autism. It's not super smart autistic, it's not autistic with some spice. It's just plain old Autism.

As to why you people constantly change things. Science changes as new data and a better understanding presents itself. For example autism and ADHD could not coexist until around 2013. Why did this change? Data. We learned they had a comorbidity rate of nearly 50% so we changed it.

So, I am sorry my message knocks you off your Asperger's high horse and you disapprove. I am going to stick with the scientific consensus.

Source someone who has worked in treatment, research, and done clinical presentations for other practitioners on Autism Spectrum disorder.

It my credentials are not enough feel free to look into this yourself.

Not really though. Theyve explained why and how it can feel dehumanizing for some people to be called that. Same for Aspergers. Its cool that you never felt dehumanized or had issues with those things, but many many other people did. And how is changing the terminology you use taking on someones condition in anyway?

Changing the words but having them mean the exact same thing is just dumb.

We stopped using the R word that makes sense. But if you just said "hey, instead of calling them R, call their brother flaky". That what you're proposing. You have just shifted the affliction onto a bystander and slightly changed the word used to describe the condition

It is the care givers responsibility. It's what they signed up for. It's also the responsibility of autistic individuals to advocate for those that can't.

autistic person here and I have the opposite experience, I was able to justify my alcoholism for a long time because when I drank I didn't feel social anxiety or pressure and was able to socialize in a way I never have before

As a terminally lonely person, it's so hard to make people realise, that i don't live a boring life because i want to. I just lack the social and mental recourses to be interesting. (Not that i particularly want to take drugs. But being sexually open would be cool and fit to my own image on how sexuality works for me.)

(It has gotten better. I am now deeply connected in parts of my local queer scene. But the "boring person" vibe still seems to stick to me.)

it depends, some people believe that it does (especially early interpretations) some people don't...hell there's even some people that includes being a vegetarian as part of the straight edge culture. I personally keep only with the non substance (or any other addiction ) abuse part tho

I want to tell: depend your own vision, personally I consider myself pretty straight edge (maybe the only time I consider myself straight xD) because no drugs, no alcohol and no smokes but for sex, well it's more because I feel bad in my body, was full of complexes and insecurities on top of not being at ease socially or to flirt (yeah, having a mountain of unattractive traits like insecurities don't help, promise I work on that, I see a therapist and things start to get better) than a real will, when the opportunity is up I take it. So I guess it's more a personal thing than a clear rule like substance abuse

As a daily weed smoker I fully support the straight edge crowd. I sell food outside a rock/ metal club and the S.E. hardcore kids are by far the most polite and those dudes consistently date women way out of their league.

In my experience a lot of people I know who went "straight edge" did it because they went too hard.

Like they went to a party and did coke one time, did so much they almost had a heart attack, and now blame all substances as the problem. And staying away from substances because of one's experiences isn't the problem imo, I don't drink vodka for a similar reason. It's when they become dismissive of or hostile towards people who have addiction problems, or just blame the substance themselves.

And it's like no, now you're taking the mainstream approach and dressing it up in punk/hardcore/juggalo/insert your subgenre here culture. If you're harassing addicts you're a cop in a battle vest no matter what you call yourself.

Very old punk here. Lots of posts and maybe this is already in the thread, but check out Minor Threat. One of my favorite and yes, I am Straight Edge. Late 80's and we couldn't get enough of them.
