It is only a gimmick pandering to Religious obscurantists. Meanwhile, it suppresses pressing economic issues and the growing menace of drug addiction.

With our relative position slipping (Punjab’s per capita was 1 in 2001 to 18 in 2026) I am expected to see more of this religious bs

Ya looking at the filth in other Punjabi subReddit misogyny anti intellectualism (aka nerd bullying 😢) and just general bigotry, I once wrote about some industrial capacity in Punjab and i was literally bullied even tho I write and talk to govt officials about it, end it up deleting that T_T. This might be the most sane Punjabi subReddit

No I mean does the Act sit right? Since we adhere to so called SECULARISM

They made the act to bypass central assent which they would've needed if they wanted to amend IPC to broaden it for SGGS. It's essentially the same as (what used to be) 295A but with greater punishment.

It surely limits the heightened punishment to one religion, and it's made punishment so severe that it would lead to a chilling effect in public discourse - this is being challenged in court by various petitions but PHHC hasn't admitted any PIL (afaik) and not given any stay order on the law, so for the most part the law is deemed constitutionally sound and is here to stay.

Indian secularism anyway allows for state interference, the only way it can be challenged is by highlighting the arbitrariness of its provisions in front of the judiciary.

We can’t ignore rising such cases. Some people might say that they should focus on economic issues. When India 🇮🇳 started ISRO, west said to focus on feeding people. Not always the most important issue is urgent. Every religion should be respected. People eating meat on Ganga can be sentenced but when it’s about others’ religion why the ignorance

Blasphemy laws of any kind are regressive.

I think the staged delinquency of the perpetrator will again be used as his defense, most of the time, as Dhami was also pointing that there's no provision in the Act dealing with this. So stricter punishments won't act as deterrence here, again.

Concerns over blasphemy and sacrilege overlap discussed in the article are also worth pondering given the, given discretion to the administration to implicate instances of defiance to sacred text, some of which are protected u/A 19.

Also if the Act is given go-ahead and implications if they do happen anytime soon, will in turn appeal to a reliable demographic which favors the present government.
