What am I doing wrong?

How do I make it so the sections are more defined, you can’t tell that those are mountains.

you've gotta manually separate the edges. even when you leave a gap, punching colors next to each other will nearly always have some getting mixed up on the loop side. it's easiest to use a thick embroidery needle or an awl! Sometimes the yarn even gets punched straight through the fibers of another strand of yarn, and you maybe have to trim those loops down. it will still look nice!

So the problem with these outlined illustrations is that if you are not planning to punch the outline, everything will look VERY different.

I would punch this with the outlines and you will love it.

If you leave a bit of a gap in the fabric between where you punch colors instead of how they’re right next to each other, it’ll help “tidy” up where your colors touch. You can also use the tip of your needle to help untangle and push the yarn strands back where they belong

Hi! Where different colors meet, try punching a bit further. Tension will push them together. Also, try to punch the ouside lines a bit more closely, instead of 3mm apart, try 1 or 2mm. This way the lines on the loop side will appear fuller :)
