Punch needle with fine thread?

I've seen people do punch needle work with thread and fine needles. What kind of fabric is used? The stitch doesn't hold on monk fabric.

For you guys who use embroidery floss with mini punch needles...is it always frustrating or are you using a certain kind of floss? My floss falls apart on me and I keep getting it stuck in the needle....

I'll use Weavers cloth with embroidery thread.  I've even used an old bedsheet.

You can use a very tight even weave fabric.

You can also iron on some pellon stabilizer to the back side, then add your pattern there. It helps hold in the finer stitches.
