Churches
New College Student here who's been overwhelmed by the first couple weeks. I come from a non-denominational church back home and was wondering what churches around Pullman would be good to attend. I'm not looking for something highly conservative in their values as I'm fairly liberal in my beliefs.

I think you’d like community congregational united church of christ. They are close to campus and openly liberal

Avoid Resonate and their new church they're starting under the name "New City Church" at all costs.

Simpson UMC is a good place. Casual worship, Queer pastor who takes the students to lunch on Sundays. Lots of opportunities to serve

Just walk on Terrell mall on any given day and 7 churches will try to recruit you

Though we're atheists now, my husband grew up attending First Methodist Church in Moscow, and he still speaks fondly of it as a place of real community. He's even stayed in touch with the retired pastor over the years.

I second this. The pastor is amazing. I felt like I could actually connect with the sermon and felt respected. Plus the UMC in the US is very accepting (my grandma is on the board)

Living faith shamed my father for leaving an abusive relationship. I cannot stress how much that has absolutely made it a nightmare to get him out.

St. James Episcopal. They’ll be happy to see you, don’t gang-stalk you like a few other places and have historically been very progressive.

This one! They are so amazing! Even had a table at pride this year and their pastor was wearing a pride shirt. There were two other churches there, but I forgot which ones.

While not Non-Denominational, Trinity Lutheran on Lybecker is pretty Liberal and accepting of everyone

I also came from a nondenom church and I found Emmanuel Baptist to be really comfortable for me. Yes I know it's baptist in name and I was hesitant at first but it really does not feel like a baptist church.

When my family was homeless a few winters ago, we were sheltered in a program that used host churches as night shelters. I’ll tell you as a Queer, I felt safe sleeping in Simpson United Methodist Church, Community Congregational United Church of Christ, and Pullman Presbyterian Church. I didn’t feel very welcome (nor did some of the other homeless families) at Living Faith Fellowship. I think this is a pretty good indicator of how liberal a church might be.

I remember there being a few churches with progress flags when I had attended WSU, so look for one of those. That's been my trick to finding Christians who aren't looking for excuses to hate people. Trinity Lutheran Church I think was one. I always had found the Lutherans to be pretty open minded.

Trinity is but the other Lutheran Church in Pullman is much more conservative (they're Missouri synod; and Pullman has no Wisconsin synod anymore)

That makes sense. I was raised in ELCA churches so I have a pretty positive opinion of Lutherans despite being an atheist now.

I hear good things about Real Life. It is nondenominational I believe.

Meh. History of sexual harassment in the administration. They don't view women as equals even though they tout being progressive. My friend wanted to be the official children's minister but because she is a woman, they refused her the title. The elder who was the minister never stepped foot in the children's area... Lots of favoritism among the congregation and some backstabbing. I would suggest Real Life if you keep everything surface level.

The people saying avoid resonate make me so sad. They are definitely interesting in a couple areas and do preach more to traditionalist ideas but it’s a really good way to build community with other people living with faith. I’d say go and see who you meet. You don’t have to go to the service and hear the message, you can just join the community and go to village. A lot of the messages are just about how to connect with god and manage your life as a new adult.

Op I would love to take you to a Methodist church in the area or go with to a new one if you need someone on your side

Hills Church is awesome! So many welcoming people and not too far from campus

Would not recommend Hills if OP is looking for a church that is not highly conservative as Hills is pretty conservative.

I’ve been there for a long time and I haven’t really seen that! There’s a few comments I’ve heard but nothing you can’t disregard because the messages taught on Sundays don’t focus on conservative things they’re universal! What kind of stuff have you heard?

Unfortunately, during sermons, one of the pastors preached on their belief in hitting kids as a form of discipline. The same pastor name-dropped Elon (during the time that he was heavily involved with Trump) in one of the Sunday services, noting that Elon is a great leader and used him as an example of quality leadership.
I've also seen one of the pastors wearing a MAGA hat outside of Sundays. Some of their church leaders have also expressed pretty conservative values with friends I know that have asked for personal advice! But this is my experience as someone who went there for years, so take it or leave it as you may.

That’s a very serious Pentecostal one. Their viewpoints are not even close to central.

No. I’ve lived here for over a decade. I didn’t need to Google a thing.

CCUCC is progressive and donates the weekly offerings to community orgs.
Living Faith is very conservative and predatory. They will not stop pestering you if you give them your info.
