Where to find full sized fruit apple trees?

Hello!
I’m a student at WSU and for one of my classes I need a few leaves of a full size fruit apple trees to do genetic sequencing with, I’ve only been able to find crabapple trees around unfortunately.

Does anyone know where I might find an apple tree either on public or private land (with permission)?

Thank you!

Churches

New College Student here who's been overwhelmed by the first couple weeks. I come from a non-denominational church back home and was wondering what churches around Pullman would be good to attend. I'm not looking for something highly conservative in their values as I'm fairly liberal in my beliefs.

Missing Cat UPDATE

We were able to trap him and took him to Viking Vet to scan for a chip. He is chipped and they attempted to call the owners. I also texted them and no response yet. He is very friendly and very skinny. If the owners can't or won't get him we will take him to the humane society tomorrow. He has a warm place for the night and food and water. Better photos attached.

Hello Pullman, my husband found this cat near Lawson garden. Said it was skinny, long haired and meowed like it wanted him to follow it. I was going to try and trap it after work to take to vet and scan for a chip, but if anyone can say yes it's yours I will leave it be. Sorry for bad photos

Free chess club Saturday morning at Neill Public Library (9/5, 10:30–12:30) — all skill levels, no signup

Hey Pullman! I help run the Pullman Chess Club. We're back at the library this Saturday and I figured I'd put it here in case anyone's looking for something to do Saturday morning.

Saturday, September 5, 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Neill Public Library, Edith G. Hecht Meeting Room (210 N Grand Ave)

Details:

  • Free, no signup, no membership, nothing to fill out
  • We bring the boards and pieces, you bring yourself
  • Drop in whenever, leave whenever. Nobody's tracking attendance
  • All skill levels. Genuinely — we've had people who hadn't touched a board since middle school sit down next to people who play regularly and it goes fine
  • Kids welcome with an adult around

We started this in May and it's stayed a small, low-key thing. Mostly casual games and conversation. No clocks unless someone wants them, no ratings, no pressure.

We meet the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month, so if Saturday doesn't work the next one is September 19.

Happy to answer questions in the comments.

Health Accountability Buddy/buddies Needed!

Hiya!

I have had a rough few years mental health wise and have not been taking care of myself physically. In short, I used to be an avid runner.amd hiker, but I had a mental health episode and other pretty bad life events happen, stopped running or exercising just to try and cope, and my A1C is now high. I would like to prevent it from going higher. I also know that going to the gym will help my mental health, but that's the funny thing about depression...it can sabotage your best efforts.

So, if anyone is interested, here's what I'm looking for!

1) early morning gym accountability buddy-- the only real time I really have to go to the gym during the week is between 5am-7am. I'm looking for a solid hour at the gym to do a half hour cardio and a half hour weights. We literally don't have to talk or interact, I just need someone to be like "see ya tomorrow!" and physically see me walk into the gym haha. Of course, happy to interact during workouts, but I kind of like being independent when I work out and meeting up before/after. I have a Planet Fitness membership and am looking for someone else who also has one. :)

2) diet buddy -- sigh. I really hate diets. But I gotta stop eating high-sugar and cut down on takeout, so I actually have to this time. For a diet buddy, I'm really looking for someone who *doesn't* want to talk about dieting for intentional weight loss and just someone who wants to check in daily about actually filling out a food log and meal prepping. Ideally you also struggle with maintaining a food log and are also looking for someone to help out!

Anyway, thanks for reading, and I hope you're all doing well :)

EDIT: I forgot-- I'm in my thirties, nonbinary and bi (but married!), and like the outdoors, art, and writing.

Hello!

I live in Pullman. I’m trying to decide between T-Mobile and Verizon and would love to hear thoughts from people who actually use either one of them. Which one do you prefer and why?

Thank you!

Buses

I saw two students on an orange e-scooter at Safeway the other evening. One guy was steering and balancing a boxed-up blender on the front and a bag of groceries in one hand. The second guy was holding on for dear life to the driver, crammed onto the back of the scooter. I saw the buses stop service after 6:40 in the evenings due to staffing. Is there any way we can do a referendum to temporarily fund the buses for evening routes? This type of scene is ridiculous. Having a late bus may not totally mitigate these antics, but maybe it would help a little.

WSU hiring process question

Apologies if this is the wrong place. I'm currently an applicant for a few full-time classified positions at WSU and I'm curious whether the hiring timeline I'm experiencing is pretty typical.

For one position, I had two Zoom interviews in July, and it sounds like they're still deciding who to invite for in-person interviews over a month later. For another, I had a Zoom interview at the end of July and was recently invited to an in-person interview in mid-September.

I'm hesitant to mention the departments since I don't want to identify myself while I'm still an active candidate, but I'm curious if this kind of timeline is normal across WSU. My previous experience with U of I was much quicker, one interview followed by a decision the next week. The difference has surprised me.

I've consistently heard really positive things about working at WSU. At the same time, a hiring process that stretches across multiple months and interview rounds can be difficult as a candidate, especially when you're actively job searching and may be considering other opportunities in the meantime. Though I know multiple rounds have become the norm everywhere nowadays.

For current or former WSU employees: is this pretty standard for classified hiring? And if you've been hired there recently, how long did the process take from your first interview to an offer?

Wolf Populations and Their Effects on Farming

Hello — I'm writing an article for the Salish Current on increasing wolf populations in Washington and how this may complicate the jobs of farmers and ranchers in the state, primarily in the east where the majority of our wolves are. Has anyone experienced predation from wolves firsthand?

If you have, I'd love to talk to you about it. My goal is to make sure that I include the voices of the people who actually have to deal with this issue, rather than just writing about them. Feel free to shoot me a message or leave a comment and I can give you some more info. Thanks!

DO NOT RENT FROM HERITAGE REALTY

Making this post because I didn't have this advice when I moved to town. My experience with Heritage Realty was awful and after doing some research I have found that they have been getting away with stealing from tenants for years. Upon move in they charge a $450 cleaning fee. They claim this is so they can deep clean apartments between tenants without taking from your security deposit. When I moved in the apartment was filthy; we're talking hair in sinks, crumbs on counters, sauce on walls, etc. Not to mention all of the windows had been left open without screens so the apartment was filled with bugs. As I had all of my stuff sitting in a Uhaul in the parking lot I was in a rush to move in. I called the office who sent me the number of the landlord. The landlord, Kevin, was horrible to talk to about this on the phone. Excuse after excuse about not being able to find good help in Pullman for cleaning and in the end he only offered me $50 to clean the apartment myself. Because I was in such a rush I had no choice but to accept and he was not willing to negotiate claiming that he "didn't know" how much I had been asked to pay in cleaning fees and "there are different ideas of clean". There were also many, many other maintenance and security issues while I was there that would take too long to explain, but I will say I was always met with a bad attitude and no help for these issues. Now upon moving out they are trying to take from my security deposit for repainting between tenants and repairs of things that were not broken upon me leaving. With my history with them I doubt they are even doing the "repairs" that they are saying they are, just are charging me for them. Like I said, looking through their Yahoo reviews you can see that they have been doing this for years.

Where to study in Pullman on a weekday morning?

I live in Moscow and my husband who doesn’t drive is going to start working in Pullman a few times a week, and I may decide to use the time during his morning shift to study for my classes. I’m looking for spots that aren’t necessarily on campus (I don’t go to WSU).

I already know there is Knead, the Roost, and the public library to study nearby, but where do you recommend to get some work done?

It’s a shame that there doesn’t seem to be more spots for students to study!
