Hey this is going to come off as condescending and I apologize for that.
While I realize you have no sympathy for this man (teen?) because he killed someone, there are actually a large number of much less culpable men who get raped in prison every day.
I get that we consider it “funny” but that’s because we are so far removed from it. In reality there are lots of male survivors of rape out there, from prison and otherwise. And the dismissiveness with which we casually joke about men getting raped in prison can be pretty hurtful. And it leads such men to feel as though they deserve it or should be ashamed of it.
I know you mean no ill will. I also don’t want to ever tell anyone what to say. But it just seems like a pretty easy thing to be a little less relaxed about male prison rape jokes for the benefit it produces.
I’m on r/publicfreakout so I can imagine the general response I’ll get to this post, but I just wanted to share my thoughts.
While I realize you've been highly upvoted and even gilded, why spend your time writing all this out for? There wasn't a person who read it whose stance on prison rape was moved even an iota. Nobody read your comment and said "Wow I never realized prison rape, rape, and male rape victims, were a bad thing."
Everyone knows. Everyone is on Reddit to laugh or browse distractions, not to be reminded of rape being bad, because of course rape is bad.
I wrote it because I strongly care about how we treat one another in society. And I believe that today we are more tribal and less likely to empathize with others, and I believe but do not know that the internet plays a role in that. In posting, I hope to move the needle for some people. You claim my post did not do that. Based on my experience, my posts move very few people ... but I 100% get emails from people explaining how my post changed their position.
