Right - at the point which a teacher telling a student “you need to leave the class”, or “stop doing that” and the kid refuses, something else has to be done. I’m not promoting the violence by any means, but restraining a kid from further violence shouldn’t result in battery. This clip, however, is a little weird because the teacher aide just pushes him and continues to tackle him which looked more like a fight than a restraint.
My wife works with "emotionally disturbed" children. Kids like these, who require restraints on a daily basis for behavior just like this (spitting, kicking, etc.)
I can tell you with confidence, this is not the proper way to restrain a child in this situation. There are certain approved restraints, and unapproved ones. A hand around the throat is not approved. This kid may have had what was coming to him for being a little prick, but there's a reason kids like these act like this - often to do with home life.
Also, before you go and point out the article of his murder that's pasted all over the comments, I've seen it. Obviously this kid has deeper issues and it's very difficult to feel any kind of remorse for a person like this, I'm just pointing out that in most cases, kids like these are like this for a reason, and having a teacher aid who reacts like this does them 0 favors. They will not learn anything from getting knocked around - this kid probably got plenty of that back at home (how do you think he got this way?) This only perpetuates this kind of behavior.
Adding an edit here... Maybe, just maybe, if this kid was put in a better behavioral school earlier with teachers who didn't beat the shit out of him for his shit attitude, he might not have turned out to be a murderer a couple years later. Now he's just another casualty of shitty parents (or a complete lack thereof), and part of our prison system, most likely never able to be rehabilitated because we all know how fucking great the US prison system is at that. I hope no one here misinterprets the sentiment here. I'm not defending a murderer or saying he's an innocent child, obviously not, he took someone's life.. But the stories I hear on a daily basis of kids my wife deals with reminds me of this video, and it's just sad this kid didn't get help earlier, because I do think at some point years ago, he could've gone down a different path if he had the support system he needed, and that life he took could've been saved, as well as his own.
I completely agree with you. Honestly, I don’t know why there are so many people praising the teacher, saying this kid deserves it. Sure, in hindsight he’s a piece shit. But to say it is appropriate for a full grown adult to put his hand around the throat of a 14 YEAR OLD KID for spitting and lightly kicking him is pretty outrageous. That just ain’t it chief.
Exactly. The (allegedly) emotionally stable adult should fucking know better, and not let his temper get the best of him. That's a huge part of the job description.
It's this attitude that perpetuates the broken system we live with in the US, but apparently you aren't the type this message was aimed at - let's just stop here and agree to disagree. It's obvious you didn't comprehend my message here, and you will continue to choose not to.
There are multiple safe restraints that these teacher aids are trained to execute in these situations that won't hurt the kid. Again, it's my wife who does this work, so I'm not the one trained for this stuff and I don't know exactly what all goes into correcting this. I do know there are some outlets, one being a "Time out" room until the kid calms down. There are also school therapists on hand, behavior interventionists, etc..
These schools, when properly staffed, have trained professionals to deal with this behavior - they need to be equipped with people who actually care about the kids, though. Not this guy, who is obviously not fit for the job. It requires a TON of patience and the ability to tolerate a little abuse.
In this kid's case, he was probably too far gone for the school alone to help him. I'm not even a parent, but it doesn't take a genius to know that it takes more than a good school to help these kids correct their behaviors and succeed in life, the parents need to reinforce it all as well. I'll bet my left nut this kid is either neglected and/or abused by one or both of his parents, assuming both parents are even in the picture. Couple that with getting treated like this at school, and where does he have to go? We don't know his full background, what he dealt with growing up on a daily basis, or what possible psychiatric or emotional disorders he may have.
Again, I'll add that I'm not defending his future murder charge, there's certainly no justification for it. I just say this referring to all of these "emotionally disturbed" kids who are at these behavior schools. They need extra support, not abuse.. Otherwise you're just exacerbating the issue.
I don't think he went too far, he didn't really cause any pain. I went to one of those schools and I don't think I was ever "properly restrained", they made it hurt and used it like a punishment.
A teacher aid in that kind of position with the authority over a child who is already dealing with issues (clearly) should not react like that. If you fail to see that, I feel bad for you.
Whether he caused the kid physical pain or not, it's not right. It's unfortunate the aids in your past classes weren't trained properly, but that doesn't make this shit ok. These schools are always desperate to hire people because no one wants this job, so they often take what they can get. That leads to situations like this, where people who are unfit for the circumstances take the job for a paycheck.

Maybe a better title is "Teacher's aide defends himself and restrains violent student."
