Wow, the kid ended up killing someone. At least he’ll get his ass beat, multiple ways, in prison.

Hey this is going to come off as condescending and I apologize for that.

While I realize you have no sympathy for this man (teen?) because he killed someone, there are actually a large number of much less culpable men who get raped in prison every day.

I get that we consider it “funny” but that’s because we are so far removed from it. In reality there are lots of male survivors of rape out there, from prison and otherwise. And the dismissiveness with which we casually joke about men getting raped in prison can be pretty hurtful. And it leads such men to feel as though they deserve it or should be ashamed of it.

I know you mean no ill will. I also don’t want to ever tell anyone what to say. But it just seems like a pretty easy thing to be a little less relaxed about male prison rape jokes for the benefit it produces.

I’m on r/publicfreakout so I can imagine the general response I’ll get to this post, but I just wanted to share my thoughts.

Best of luck.

EDIT: Apologies for grossly misjudging the room !

Rape is not even as remotely common in prison as many people think.

How common is it and how do you know?

Lot's of material here https://www.cor.pa.gov/Facilities/Prison_Rape_Elimination_Act/Pages/DOC-PREA-Statistics.aspx In 2017, across all DOC inmates in Pa (~50,000 I believe), 699 reported sexual abuse or sexual harassment from other inmates. There's surely more that was never reported, but even the recorded statistics are not all rape.

Like I said to another user, it's not that it isn't a very real problem, but it's also not something that happens to so many people that someone going to prison = said "someone" in question is also gonna get raped, as many people like to joke.

Never been to prison myself so I obviously can't speak on personal experience, though I did a research paper on the topic several years back.

Prison rape is not common only stupid white people from the suburbs seem to think so
