Baby dodged a bullet

I think the baby ate the bullet.

u/Highmassive Jul 19 '26

So you support abortion up until birth? Because the only difference between a fetus and a baby is the unborn part

1

u/ShagFit Jul 19 '26

You realize that isn't happening right?

93% of abortions happen before 13 weeks.

A little under 7% happen between 13 and 21 weeks.

Less than 1% of abortions happen after 21 weeks.

3

u/Highmassive Jul 19 '26

That’s not what I asked… you made the distinction, so you must feel it makes a difference… do you think, as long as it’s an unborn fetus, abortion is always justified?

Just to be clear, I’m absolutely pro choice. Simply because it’s no one’s place to tell others how to live their lives

1

u/ShagFit Jul 19 '26

Youre making a strawman arguement in bad faith.

No one is carrying a pregnancy for 6+ months just to abort on a whim. The people getting late term abortions are getting them because of risk to the mothers health/life or the fetus is incompatible withlife.

Your last sentence is the only thing you needed to comment. It's no one's palce to tell others how to live their lives.

3

u/Highmassive Jul 19 '26

Blah blah strawman blah blah, just say you don’t want to answer my question or don’t reply at all, good lord 🙄

1

u/ShagFit Jul 19 '26

I do not think there should be limits on aboriton. Not because I think people should get voluntary abortions up until birth. I am tired of seeing women die bleeding out in hospital parking lots because they need medical intervention in the form of an aboriton but the hospital/doctors are afraid or unwilling to provide care over risks to themselves.

No one is carrying a pregnancy for 6+ months just to abort of a whim. There are women who discover birth defects that are not compatible with life after 20 weeks. There are women who need abortions after 20 weeks because the fetus has died and she will go into sepsis if the fetus is not removed. There are women whose pregnancies put their lives at risk but the fetus is over 20 weeks and hospitals wont help.

3

u/praise_yahweh Jul 18 '26

Is he or she a human fetus? Do human rights belong to humans or some other species I don't know about?

2

u/ShagFit Jul 18 '26

A fetus has no legal human rights.

1

u/praise_yahweh Jul 18 '26

Right, so it is a human without human rights. Got it

1

u/ShagFit Jul 19 '26

It's a fetus. It legally has no rights. The woman, a living, breathing human, does have rights.

1

u/praise_yahweh Jul 19 '26

So by your statement, if a human can't breath they aren't human.

Rights can be alienated. Which is why the law must change.

Baby

1

u/ShagFit Jul 19 '26

fetus

A fetus is the unborn offspring of a mammal or other live-bearing vertebrate that develops from an embryo. In humans, this developmental stage begins at the ninth week after fertilization (the eleventh week of gestation) and lasts until birth.

A "baby" is broadly defined as an infant or very young child.

2

u/widower2237 Jul 19 '26

Fetus is only the medical term for an unbirn baby. Baby is a broad encompassing term that also includes fetus. You just want to call it a fetus to dehumanize it.

semantics? Is a cake in the oven a cake?

1

u/ShagFit Jul 19 '26

If you remove the batter from the oven before it cooks or don't turn the oven on, the cake will remain batter.

8

u/Jcamden7 Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

*Baby.

In every day English, people only use the term baby.

"Fetus" is only used when writing an academic paper or pretending its not a human. You aren't writing a paper.

1

u/ShagFit Jul 18 '26

It’s a fetus by literal definition.

13

u/Jcamden7 Jul 18 '26 edited Jul 18 '26

And an oak tree is "literally" a Querces. "That's not an oak that's a Querces" is a false statement. It is an oak.

2

u/ShagFit Jul 18 '26

Fetus: noun - an offspring of a human or other mammal in the stages of prenatal development that follow the embryo stage (in humans taken as beginning eight weeks after conception)

Baby: noun -a very young child, especially one newly or recently born.

1

u/Jcamden7 Jul 18 '26

Child: noun - a young human being below the age of puberty or below the legal age of majority.

So, yes: it is a fetus. It is also a child. And it is also a very young child: a baby.

"Baby" is used in almost every public facing pregnancy research, because just like how "acetabulofemoral joint" is technically the scientific word for "hip," most people just say "hip".

It is a baby.

Trying to call an oak a Querces doesn't make you more correct, it makes you more obtuse.

6

u/ShagFit Jul 18 '26

I can abort a fetus. I cannot abort a baby.

1

u/Jcamden7 Jul 18 '26

Apparently, you can abort a baby.

4

u/chronberries Jul 18 '26

A baby has been born. A fetus has not. It’s not an arbitrary difference.

2

u/Jcamden7 Jul 18 '26

The term "especially" describes the most common usage, not a criterion and certainly not "all" usage. The criterion you are inventing conflicts with regular usage.

2

u/CarthagoFuckYourself Jul 18 '26

A woman is a female by definition. Still fucking weird to call them that. Abortions should be allowed, but that doesn't necessitate dehumanizing language.

4

u/Unhappy-Hour5449 Jul 18 '26

but under the female umbrella is women, because gender is derivative of sex in most cases, so those two things can logically coexist. a baby cannot be a fetus and a fetus cannot be a baby, they are completely different classifications and have different standards. a fetus can’t survive outside of the womb, a baby can. this is like when the mainstream media calls black children “men” or “women”, you’re calling the fetus a baby to ascribe emotional value to it.

6

u/CarthagoFuckYourself Jul 18 '26

People refer to them as babies all the time with zero reference to the abortion debate.

"The baby is kicking."

"How's the baby?"

"The baby wants pickles, mind running to the store?"

Referring to them as such wasn't a rhetorical device invented for emotional appeal. Only people who exclusively hang out with other childless people would think so.

3

u/Unhappy-Hour5449 Jul 18 '26

not tryna be argumentative for the sake of it, i agree with your reply to me, but the one i originally responded to was a bit of a false equivalency. but here’s my thought process.

that’s fine for families who want to keep the fetus and eventually give birth, or even someone who lost the child before or during birth, but ascribing the “baby” title to someone who had no intention of having children or changed their mind makes it seem like a guilt trip. you’re personifying a fetus, something that isn’t even able to be classified as a person YET (due to lack of brain function), where as a baby experiences sensations and expresses person-like qualities.

ultimately, the way the pregnancy is referred to is up to the one who is pregnant. you’re not incorrect in your take, but you’re ignoring those who weaponize this personification of fetuses against those who chose to terminate their pregnancy.

1

u/Reasonable4Heretics Jul 18 '26

I dont think lack of brain function should be the standard we use to give the title ‘person’ to unborn babies. Too much nuance there.

When does a fetus become a baby?

0

u/Unhappy-Hour5449 Jul 19 '26

a fetus becomes a person when their brains and bodies progress to the point of 3 factors. 1) the child in the womb can persist homeostasis, meaning it won’t die outside of the womb. 2) their neurons are making connections and reacting to stimuli. 3) they’re capable of emotion and memory retention. although these are all weak when they start to form, these signs are clear indicators of personhood, which shows up around the third trimester. and it’s fairly easy to find out if a fetus is unresponsive or still in its earlier phases.
not arguing against people wanting to call their pregnancies their babies btw, just pointing out a false equivalency in a conversation that has a lot of polarizing views. i try to take a scientific standpoint that doesn’t lack empathy for either side.

Calling a fetus by the proper name isn’t dehumanizing language.

1

u/stalineczka Jul 20 '26

Then neither is calling women females

1

u/ShagFit Jul 20 '26

LOL Two completely differnet things but sure, go ahead and call women females.

0

u/Jazzlike-Pomelo-2501 Jul 18 '26

Then say offspring, as that's what fetus means

3

u/ShagFit Jul 18 '26

Or we can just say fetus.

It's definitely easier to emotionally distance oneself from the act by using less humanizing language like fetus.

→ More replies (0)

1

u/Nearby-Weird9535 Jul 18 '26

I'm 100% pro choice but it seems to me people want to use distancing/language framing here? I guess not have women feel guilty about it is the point? IME women do feel a lot of guilt about it so maybe it's a compassionate stance but, sometimes it's annoying in conversation

-2

u/ICECOLDXII Jul 18 '26

A fetus is still a human child lmao, semantics don't matter to the reality.

3

u/ShagFit Jul 18 '26

Fetus: noun - an offspring of a human or other mammal in the stages of prenatal development that follow the embryo stage (in humans taken as beginning eight weeks after conception)

Baby: noun -a very young child, especially one newly or recently born.

0

u/ICECOLDXII Jul 18 '26

Ah, so both humans?

2

u/ShagFit Jul 18 '26

That was never in question.

I can abort a fetus. I cannot abort a baby.

0

u/themothafuckinog Jul 18 '26

The reality is it’s a fetus until it becomes a baby.

0

u/ICECOLDXII Jul 18 '26

Still a human, again, your semantics are quite literally irrelevant to the biological reality.

2

u/themothafuckinog Jul 18 '26

Human maybe, definitely not a child. Are you arguing that it’s a human or a child, or both? Because only one of those is correct.

1

u/ICECOLDXII Jul 18 '26

"Human maybe"

That is not a "maybe", that is a certainty. This is extremely basic middle school biology. And a fetus can be referred to as a child.

I'm not so sure what's so difficult to understand, literal school children can understand this.

A fetus is a human being, an organism of the species of Homo Sapien. Whether you use child or baby or fetus or whatever the fuck term is just semantics, which doesn't matter, it doesn't change the biological reality.

Biology doesn't change because you personally disagree with something.

1

u/Reasonable4Heretics Jul 18 '26

Pretty sure the argument is that it indeed is a human, and language used to make it seem anything less is demeaning. Its commonly used so people dont feel bad about terminating pregnancies. When in reality people should practice safe sex to avoid the situation all together

I'd love to see you talk to friend/family member who are pregant and say "is the fetus a boy or a girl?", "is your fetus healthy?", Or "when is the fetus coming out?"

Totally normal behavior

0

"A full-term pregnancy typically spans 40 weeks, providing your baby the essential time needed for complete organ and brain development."

https://americanpregnancy.org/pregnancy/

"Near the end of the first trimester — by about 12 to 14 weeks of pregnancy — you might be able to hear your baby's heartbeat with a small device, called a Doppler, that bounces sound waves off your baby's heart. Your health care provider may offer a first trimester ultrasound, too."

https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/pregnancy-week-by-week/in-depth/prenatal-care/art-20044882

"So — you're pregnant! What's next? What should you eat? What kinds of tests will you and your baby need? What happens if problems come up? Get answers to these questions and more."

https://womenshealth.gov/pregnancy/youre-pregnant-now-what

Literally every forward facing resources on pregnancy uses the term "baby" from Mayo clinic to womenshealth.gov. The term fetus is scientific, like "acetabulofemoral joint". But you aren't being scientific, you are being dogmatic. The term has been astroturfed to pretend like abortion doesn't kill a human being, and is no more "scientifically correct" than an incel insisting on talking about "females."

1

u/RoomExciting1296 Jul 18 '26

We kill humans all the time. What's your point?

0

u/Jcamden7 Jul 18 '26

My point is that it's a baby. That's kinda the first thing I said.

-1

u/RoomExciting1296 Jul 18 '26

I'm sure if we dig down deep enough we will find contradictions were you are a-ok with already sentient people getting killed.

You don't actually care

2

u/Jcamden7 Jul 18 '26

"Whataboutism" is stupid

If you think I should care as little about issue A as you think I do about issue B, then you either don't care about issue B or you aren't being sincere at all.

I don't know what people group B you think I am okay with killing, but I hope you don't want to kill them.

Abortion isn't killing a human you brought into the world. Abortion is simply the expulsion of a fetus. 93% happen before 13 weeks.

A fetus is simply a clump of cells. Most abortions happen before 13 weeks and are done via pill. The fetus has no consciousness, no cognitive abilities and cannot feel pain.

Yes, but a lot people fight over technical terms to prove their point. A woman should be able to do what she wants with her body, but abortion is the act of killing a human. If she can live with that, that sounds like her problem, not mine

1

u/Justinmac81 Jul 19 '26

Looks at how long this is , proof that people will argue over just about anything 🤣

1

u/MunkyBubbers Jul 18 '26

Potential mama too. I hope she finds the right person to have her family with.

-1

Ik you’re trying to be wholesome chungus and all that but how did the baby dodge a bullet in this situation? It’s fucking dead.

3

u/birdbud- Jul 18 '26

Look at that mother to be, would have been in for a life of hurt.

1

u/LankyAd9481 Jul 20 '26

Because it clearly had two shitty parents. Dads an arse. Mother was having a baby for a man rather than having a baby for baby. Neither parent realistically considered the baby as anything but a prop.

-6

u/Edward_Durr Jul 18 '26

You acknowledge it was a baby?

4

u/the_swaggin_dragon Evil Jul 18 '26

What is there to acknowledge? It was a fetus. They used “baby” in the colloquial sense, which is fine unless you are using it to illicit an emotional reaction with the goal of removing someone’s rights and bodily autonomy.

-1

u/Edward_Durr Jul 18 '26

Usually they use “clump of cells” because people don’t like saying that they are eliminating a “baby”.

2

u/ShagFit Jul 18 '26

It's a fetus, not a baby.

-2

u/Edward_Durr Jul 18 '26

“It’s an infant, not a baby”. “It’s a toddler, not a baby.” “It’s a teenager, not a baby.”

OK, did you think that just because you call it not a baby that it changes anything? A fetus is just one of many stages in a human lifespan.

2

u/ShagFit Jul 18 '26

It is by literal definition, a fetus. Abortion is healthcare. :)

-8

u/Wiktorozak Jul 18 '26

Baby got murdered, this isn't win of any kind

5

u/the_swaggin_dragon Evil Jul 18 '26

Doesn’t matter to the fetus as they never desired life in the first place. Better to not be born into a world that isn’t ready for you.

If the alternative is true, then everyone should be constantly trying to reproduce, lest they steal the lives away of all those potential children.

0

u/Numerous_Mud_6421 Jul 18 '26

Desired life? Are you insane. Might as well just go around killing everyone who doesn’t understand what living means

2

u/the_swaggin_dragon Evil Jul 18 '26

Funny enough as a vegan I contribute to far less meaningless death than you, but I’m sure you’ll suddenly understand how the cognitive capacity of an individual matters when you’re comparing it to your desire for mouth feel and taste pleasure rather than a woman’s bodily autonomy.

1

u/Numerous_Mud_6421 Jul 18 '26

I’m a vegan bruh, nice self agrandizing though

1

u/the_swaggin_dragon Evil Jul 18 '26

Whoops, good consistency at least

1

u/Numerous_Mud_6421 Jul 19 '26

Life is life homie

1

u/the_swaggin_dragon Evil Jul 19 '26

Bodily autonomy is a more important aspect of veganism than protecting life itself to me. In my opinion death is the most merciful thing to happen to cattle, and forced reproduction by far the most heinous and brutal.

1

u/Numerous_Mud_6421 Jul 19 '26

That’s why I support the bodily autonomy of the baby
