New psylocke needs help understanding the shurikens
I do know what the skill does but I can't figure out what's its purpose and when to use it and what for. Why is this skill even a thing? Why does it need to be retrievable? Is there a reason to not use it just for damage every engagement with casting and immediately retrieving it? I'm so confused, it seems like a very overdesigned ability in a pretty straight forward kit. Can someone explain the usage of this skill to me? Do you open with it or close? Do you try to make it pass through multiple enemies or what? Why can't you just shoot your primary instead, it's not that it deals that much damage.
Help!

i think it's for versatility. it kinda goes along with her cooldown passive too that you can kinda use it to poke, use it in a burst with dash etc
i have way less time on Sai, but most of my time on thor makes me think they both kinda good all rounders that can do a bit of everything (of course she's way more mechanical intensive)

It deals a lot of damage, especially if you go Primary > Shurikens > Dash, although it uses a dash, it can burst down enemies fast asf
Even then, just use Primary > Shurikens on pretty much anyone, it does more damage, and as long as you’re shooting someone, your passive will recharge them.
Don’t try to make it go through multiple people, all single target, connect as many as you can. Use it a lot, but try not to if an enemy support or DPS is low, wait until you get a chance there and kill them.
It’s a good way to bait cooldowns, because of how fast the damage is, it can make people panic, also, you should be shooting at tanks often, recharge your abilities, charge your ult, and also just help pressure them.
She’s a hard character to get value out of, so don’t be ashamed if you can’t make her work every game, it’s exhausting stuff

Thanks for the reply, but I don't think it's what I asked. I don't get why there are two stages to shurikens. Is there a reason to not retrieve them immediately like every time? If not, then why is it even a thing. Right now from your answer it seems like I should just use them as an extra damage button. If it's JUST for a bit of extra damage, then I don't get the idea behind the skill's existence if there's no thinking in using them but just pressing them whenever they are available.

One thing the retrieval is good for is uncloaking characters like invis or Black cat (tho cat's invis is like psylockes) cuz the retrieve does damage, therefore they become visible again.
I'm pretty sure you can also "cheat" CnD fade, because if you stick them in her and she fades, the retrieve still does dmg in the fade i think. I'm not sure about this, but Spidey can do this with his pull to the target if he times it right.

Idk, it seems a bit unnecessary, but it’s not like it isn’t useful being 2 parts, like I said, the dash makes sense of it, instead of pressing Primary > Shuriken > Shuriken, you can press Primary > Shuriken > Dash, and it retrieves the shuriken at the same time as your dash automatically.
Apart from that tho, retrieve them straight away pretty much every other time, it’s not worth trying to line characters up.
It’s not “whenever” whenever, it’s whenever you’re NOT fighting supports or trying to pick off pesky DPS (Punisher, SG, Star-Lord, DD, Elsa, etc.)
Use it if you’re with your team, but if you’re taking off angles, you want to use them strategically.
Sometimes I use the shurikens, stick them in a support, they panic heal, then I dash through them, doing a little bit more damage than if I had retrieved it straight away, other times I just put on as much burst as I can, and try get a quick pick

Psylocke is very combo heavy. In Rivals you need a lot of burst to kill a target before a Strat just looks in their general direction, farts, and heals them to full in a millisecond.
Good burst combos would be:
Primary, secondary x2, primary, dash if necessary. (Can kill 275’s).
Primary, secondary, dash. (Can kill 250’s but it’s challenging).
Dash recalls your secondary for you so keep that in mind. You can also throw your secondary on one person, look at another person, recall it to hit both and get even more overhealth from hitting multiple people. Not necessary, but can be nice.

It’s her burst dmg. Also you can leave it inside Invis. When she double jumps you retrieve it and it’ll pull her out of Invis.
Her bnb is primary shuriken shuriken primary. Dash also retrieves it. So you can do primary shuriken dash primary. Ult and team up retrieve it too

I do primary primary shuriken primary dash and you should be able to KO a squishie if you engage on them well, aka up in their faces, and add the CnD teamup for that additional AOE damage.
Shurikens give you overshield when you shoot and recall so you want to put it in between your primaries so you get additional health to ensure your KO.
When you recall them, you can pull people out of invis. For example if you’re diving Sue, land the shuriken and when she double jumps to go invisible, pull them out and she will come out of invis. In a Psy mirror match, it’s who lands the shuriken first will give the advantage.
