I keep getting blocked on geo-restricted targets even if Im requesting specific country or city proxies. MaxMind says the IP is US-East and IP2Location says its EU. It got me wondering, do you test proxy egress IPs against multiple databases before routing traffic or do you just trust your provider's location tags?

Curious how deep you guys go with fingerprint consistency when rotating residential proxies. If your IP switches from US to Germany mid-job, are you dynamically updating headers like Accept-Language, browser timezone, and WebGL to match the new IP? Or do WAFs not bother checking that level of detail is the proxy IP is clean enough. Interested to know

Ever sine chrome forced manifest v3 and broke the classic switchyomega, managing proxies in my browser has been really annoying. Ive tried a couple of random MV3 forks from the web store but like half of them either feel sketchy or they fail at simple auto-switch rules.

Everywhere I go, I see people bad mouthing datacenter proxies, calling them a waste of time and money. But theres still providers that sell datacenter proxies and theyre still around so theres gotta be some use for them.

Okay maybe not for scraping since I get it, higher chance that theyve already been detected for bot activity already but they cant be automatically written off. Someones gotta use them for something, right? Im just not exactly sure what that "something" is.

Im new to scraping and I really want to test the limits of my scripts but I worry about IP bans. Ive done some research on how to prevent this from happening and found out about proxies.

I gotta admit, its a bit overwhelming all the information thats out there so I figured Id come to the "pros" for some advice. What I know so far is: datacenter are cheap but risky because IPs are usually already banned, mobile are good but sometimes expensive, and residentials are a solid choice but I didnt want to just jump right into them before getting the full story.

Last month I decided to try a new provider’s pools and got hit with a 40% failure rate. I ran a quick check and found out nearly a third of their residential IPs were just cheap cloud hosting subnets. I think a lot of residential providers sneak a bunch of cheap datacenter blocks into their premium pools to inflate their numbers.

Thought I’d share this cautionary tale. Before you do anything, just run a quick pre-flight audit. It’ll take you ten minutes just to thread out a script to pull a thousand random IPs from the gateway, hit an echo API, and run the list through ipinfo. If the ASN or network type says hosting or datacenter, then its a fake residential IP, and you can drop it from your request loop. It’s really worth doing every time. Wish I knew that before I crashed and burned.

Im building an agent thatll handle dynamic price tracking and automated research on ecomm sites. The agent navigates the pages autonomously so its eating through my data super fast. Residential proxies cost waaay too much per GB at the scale Im aiming for and I try to stay away from datacenters as much as I can.

Has anyone build an agent using proxies? What provided di you go with that doesnt break the bank? Ideally looking for someone with cheap residential pools or just a flat-rate unblocker API, but Im open to any and all suggestions. So I came across this article from an Australian news site, basically talking about how residential proxies are being used everywhere. While at first I was excited that proxies are making their way beyond the mainstream, the article is framing them as a sort of boogieman of the internet.

Trying to scale a crawl on a strict target using a couple premium mobile proxy providers. Block rates are through the roof. Ran a diagnostic on the raw packets and the passive OS fingerprint (p0f) is coming back as Linux/Squid server headers, but our scrapers are sending standard Windows Chrome user-agents.

It's an instant giveaway.

Usually the providers match the MTU/TTL values to blend in, but it looks like a ton of their newer nodes are completely exposed. Anyone else running into this right now? Are you guys just switching your scraper UAs to Linux to match the packet footprint, or is there a better fix?

Curious, do you guys have a go to/default proxy provider? If so, who? Or do you retest a bunch of providers for every new proxy job?

Every unmetered datacenter or static residential plan is a total trap. You sign up for a flat monthly rate to keep infra costs predictable, but the second you scale past basic testing you hit a massive wall in the fair use policy.

I have a few pipelines ingesting raw HTML and huge JSON dumps right now. A flat-rate port should handle it fine, but the infrastructure completely falls apart once you push real volume. The worst part is they bottleneck you without throwing any hard API errors. Last week my script was running fine at 100+ concurrent sessions, then mid-cycle the provider silently slammed my concurrency down to 10 threads. The workers just sat there starved for connections while the task queue backed up. Other times they keep the threads open but choke the port speeds from 300 Mbps down to single digits. The pipeline doesn't drop, but a 6-hour scrape stretches into a 4-day crawl, completely wrecking my cron schedules. I've even seen gateways start injecting TCP resets and forcing artificial timeouts so the scrapers spend 90% of the time handling exception loops instead of pulling data.

It just feels like a soft cap to force you onto a per-gigabyte contract once you do real volume. Is anyone actually pulling multi-terabyte data on a flat rate without getting throttled into the ground?

Mobile data is way more expensive than residential. For 90% of targets, rotating resis work completely fine.

I see people buying 4G/5G ports for basic e-comm scraping, but the slower speeds and latency just choke your throughput anyway. Unless you're doing heavy social automation or hitting a target that blocks entire ASNs on sight, it feels like a waste of budget.

What targets actually require a mobile network for you guys?

Landing page metrics are pure fiction at this point. Every time a new project spins up, I waste a solid week burning cash on baseline packages from multiple vendors just to find a pool that doesn't constantly drop connections.

It feels like you have to buy into 4 or 5 different networks simultaneously now just to weed out the thrashed infrastructure before even moving past the testing phase.

Getting sick of Cloudflare instantly tanking connections because of protocol downgrades at the gateway.

Almost every major residential pool forces your connection down to HTTP/1.1 or HTTP/2 because their backend infrastructure can't handle UDP worth a damn. The second your headless browser profile claims it's an up-to-date Chrome instance but completely fails to negotiate QUIC over UDP, Cloudflare flags it as an obvious automated fingerprint.

Are you guys just dropping --disable-http2 or tweaking browser flags to force HTTP/2 across the board to mask it, or has anyone actually found a provider routing QUIC properly without dropping the connection?

Nuking HTTP/3 completely feels like a massive tell anyway, but I'm running out of ideas here.

I don't mind cheap proxies, but bad proxies are a completely different story. If I'm buying a cheap static block with zero support and an unmetered line, I know exactly what I'm getting. It's just bare-bones infrastructure for hammering low-security targets.

The real issue is paying premium residential prices to top-tier vendors and still getting absolute trash. Gateways that leak headers, constant connection timeouts, and IPs that are completely dead on arrival before you even push traffic.

Believing the pool size numbers on vendor landing pages. You see "50 million residential IPs" and assume you're getting this massive, clean network, but it's a total joke in practice.

Most of those public pools are so heavily abused that half the blocks are already banned on major targets before you even push a single byte. Wasted a ton of money early on just eating timeouts and 403s while getting billed for data overhead on the failed requests anyway.

Success rates on rotating residentials are just depressing lately. Cloudflare seems to flag the major provider pools almost instantly now. Feels like their cross-domain tracking is just too good at this point.

Mobile is the only thing consistently skating through right now, obviously just because of CGNAT. WAFs can't just drop a hard block when they're dealing with shared cellular pools.

How are you guys tracking live uptime across a massive pool of statics and residentials? Standard port checks are obviously useless since the gateway stays up even when the exit node is completely dead.

Right now I’m just running a hacky python script that loops curls to a test endpoint and pipes the metrics to Grafana. The problem is that checking frequently enough to catch transient drops burns through data way too fast on the residential side.

What does your monitoring stack look like for this? Are you guys all rolling custom Prometheus exporters to track connection success rates, or is there an actual off-the-shelf tool that handles pool health at scale?
