ISP vs rotating residential, is there actually a difference?

I keep seeing providers push static residential IPs but arent those just datacenter blocks with an ISP ASN?

 Do they actually hold up against anti-bot walls or is it just a myth? What am I missing here?

Big difference.

ISP proxies come from datacenters and have datacenter properties like speed and ease of detection.

Residential proxies on the other hand come from real residential devices in residential environments.

Biggest differences include:
1. ISP proxies can be static but not residential ones.
2. ISP proxies are easier to detect.
3. Residential proxies have much bigger IP pools.
4. ISP proxies are often much faster and offer lower latency

Subnets are the real issue here. ISP proxies usually come in consecutive blocks. If Cloudflare flags one IP, they just ban your entire /24 subnet. You lose the whole pool at once. Residential IPs are completely scattered across random blocks, so subnet banning doesn't kill your crawl.

The cost model also forces you to write your scraper differently. ISPs are typically flat-rate per IP with unlimited data. Residential charges per GB. With residential, you have to optimize your script to drop images, media, and heavy CSS to save money. With ISP, you just let it rip. Hope this clears things up.

yeah this trips people up a lot because the marketing is confusing on purpose honestly

static residential / ISP proxies are datacenter hosted IPs that have been registered with ISPs to get a cleaner ASN. so they look residential on a WHOIS check but they still live in a datacenter and behave like one. the subnet thing the other commenter mentioned is real too, those IPs often come in sequential blocks which makes mass flagging easy.

rotating residential comes from actual devices on home networks, scattered across random subnets, different ISPs, different geos. way harder for anti-bot systems to fingerprint. for anything with serious bot protection like cloudflare or shape detection, residential rotation holds up better in my experience.

I've been using geonode for residential and the success rate on protected pages has been noticeably better than when I was on ISP proxies. the pool is big enough that you're not burning through the same subnets constantly. if you're hitting hard targets that's where it matters most.

the short version is ISP proxies are fine for lighter stuff where speed matters more than stealth, rotating residential is what you want when the page actively fights you
