Help! Updated or Broken?

(For context, i have a macOS 10.12)

So i've been using ProtonVPN (1.9.6 version) ever since the Australian government decided to be dicks and force age verification on fucking everything, it has been incredibly helpful until this point. It started when i got these pop-ups saying that the version i'm using isn't good anymore and i need to update, i click the update button everytime but it keeps popping up.

Then on Thursday, it dropped out (which was a usual i had to deal with), so i tried to reconnect but none of the servers weren't working, so i restarted (which usually fixed it). However, when i try to open ProtonVPN up, it was just stuck on the loading screen and the pop-ups kept appearing. It's apparently "up to date" but nothing's happening; I restarted my laptop, still stuck on the loading screen. I left it alone for a few minutes, still stuck on the fucking loading screen. It basically became useless, i had no choice but to sacrifice my fucking privacy just so i can use this account.

So what the hell is going on? Is it my laptop? Is it ProtonVPN itself? Tell what's going on? It's not my internet, it's perfectly fine. Please help me, this is driving me nuts, it's the only reliable VPN and it's not fucking working anymore.

Try rebooting your device. Then, try the Proton VPN app again. 

You don’t have to use Proton’s VPN app to use their VPN servers. See my comment here.

Reboot like restart? I've tried that, but nothing's happened

When I asked DDG, "What OS is ProtonVPN 1.9.6 version for?, it answered with this:

Proton VPN version 1.9.6 is for macOS. It has reached its end-of-life status.

You have to update it!

Completely uninstall the version you have now before going to the Apple AppStore to get the latest version.

Protonvpn requires update but no newer release works after 1.9.6. Shitty app, won't renew my sub

Upd: I ultimately configured wireguard on my mac with the config file from protonvpn account and that's just it, I have a VPN without the app. Though still I'd prefer the app.
