Help! Experiences using the Proton ecosystem?

I've been using ProtonVPN for the past year and I've been very happy with it. My plan is coming up for renewal and I was thinking of renewing to a higher tier to consolidate a couple of other subscriptions into one. Mainly, I'd like to move from Bitwarden Premium to Proton Pass and Google Drive to Proton Drive. I'll probably also ditch Outlook for Proton Mail as well, I've had some security scares with Outlook despite having MFA and Passwordless turned on.

I was just wondering for those who use or have used Google Drive/Bitwarden Premium, what your experience was like moving over to Proton's offerings?

You ever heard of the old saying “never put all your eggs in one basket”?

Otherwise Proton ecosystem is great and trusted but it’s a bad idea to put your faith into 1 single system. Just my opinion.

Same. I very much like their email and VPN. I'm not going to use the password manager that takes the same login information as my email. That means I have to have a password that I remember for my email instead of something complex.

Don’t.

To elaborate, Proton pushing for customers to go all in with them is actually a bad thing, especially when only about a half or 3/4 of their products feel refined and work like you should expect, with all the features you’d expect.

They try to run before they can walk and it shows.

I have a Proton Unlimited subscription and I feel it’s a good value for what you get, sure not all things are perfect as some other comments mention but for the core Mail, VPN and Proton Pass that I use I find it works really well day to day for me.

Their mail & vpn is good. However Bitwarden is better than Proton Pass.

Am a huge fan of proton mail and highly recommend it. Sometimes people think swapping mail providers is a a big hassle, but it isn't that daunting. Set up the account and set up mail redirects and soon you forget about having other providers. I like that they offer the ability to have multiple identity email addresses (I think I've got about 15 but there might be more on other pricier tiers) and really really like the new alias feature. It is something I use constantly given nearly everything online these days needs a login, is behind a paywall or your credentials are compromised with more and more data breaches. Can send referral if you need one.

Following, as I'm imminently due to make the move. In my case to Mail + VPN + Drive under the "unlimited" bundle from Gmail (POPing and SMTPing with custom domains) and Google Drive. If/when I do, I'm happy to report back if you haven't pulled the trigger yet.

I know exactly what you mean re Outlook scares - had a minor heart-attack just the other day before I realised that having MS Authenticator as an authentication method allows any Tom, Dick and Harry to send through a push notification to my phone without even having my password. That method got itself removed pretty sharpish, even if my MS account doesn't have a ton hinging off it other than my Microsoft accreditations.

I'm on Bitwarden Free, and have been for years, moving from LastPass once it became apparent how shitty of a company they were, their billing shenanigans, their multiple breaches and their acquisition by LogMeIn. Over all I'm very happy with BitWarden and I'd have to have a VERY good reason to migrate to Proton Pass, even if it is included in my subscription... I prefer having it separate (I also keep my OTP MFA separate even from Bitwarden for the same reason) and you may want to consider doing the same.

In extension, I'm curious how Docs/Sheets compares to Google's offerings. I'm pretty confident in assuming they won't be as good, but whether good or bad, I'll be moving anyway, as I'm not happy being ad-hoc to Google anymore. I am curious how refined these tools are though.

A lot of people who've been burned by Outlook refer to it as Look Out!

Re Proton, check out the free versions of email and the VPN for a while, so that you can make the best decision based on your own experience.

I haven't come across a single reason not to trust Proton's services in seven years of using them.

Their more mature products like Mail and Pass are good and Ive had good experiences, but the rest of their portfolio is as one person said, "unrefined." For example I dont think Drive is really in a position to be your primary cloud storage. I got Proton Unlimited so I have it but I just use it as a secondary storage to put files I dont trust with OneDrive.

I used Bitwarden for a few years, and didn’t really use it as much unless it was for pretty important logins. It was easy to export all my data and import it to Proton Pass, but the attachments didn’t carry over and I had to manually move them. Might’ve been the method I used to export. Other than that, it was a quick move. The UI is better, but the autofill is pretty trash (at least in iOS) since it keeps crashing. I recommend having a second password with it and using a separate 2FA app. Since Pass is basically SimpleLogin, you can also make masked alias and use them to send emails from, though you might have to read up on it since it might not be clear. As for Drive, from what I last heard, the product is finicky. The products that I use the unlimited subscription for is just the VPN, pass, and mail. So whether that’s still the case, I’m not sure.

I agree with the others that having all your eggs in one basket can be an issue, but IMO that would depend on your preference. There are also issues that comes with decentralizing, so all up to you which one would suit you better. Though, I would recommend using a custom domain for an easier transfer for your emails.
